9th grader; just got SAT results back...

Hi. I'm in the 9th grade. I took the SAT on March 13th and got my scores back today:
Math: 700
Writing: 610 (10/12)
Reading: 540
(Total: 1850)
These are the scores I pretty much predicted I would get, and I'm thrilled with my math score. However, my writing and reading scores are a bit weak. Unfortunately, I don't read that often, and books that grab my interest seem to be rare these days (plus I feel like there's so much other stuff to do). How can I get my reading/writing scores up? How should I prepare for the 11th grade SAT (the one where I'll actually submit my scores)? What should I do to study?

Thanks in advance.

I’m confused; I’m pretty sure you have to submit all your scores throughout your high school career? So there is a chance you have to send in this one. Maybe I’m wrong though

Start by doing a lot of practice tests. A lot of the vocab are repeated so write down the ones you see often and study them. It helps if you put them on flashcards and tape them to your door and you can’t open it until you know the meaning of it :)

As for writing, practice a couple of essays and have a teacher critique. It also helps if you take a half hour break and go over it because with a fresh mind you’re bound to find some errors in development. Work on attention grabbers as your first sentence.

Practice makes perfect!

honestly, preparing two years in advance is not the way to go. read as much as possible throughout your high school life, but dont worry about junior year sat’s for a long while

@organism: Even I have to submit this one, it probably won’t matter that much because they won’t care about my 9th grade SAT scores. Thanks for the tips, by the way
@bballman327: While I partially agree with you, I’ve heard of other people who have studied for the SAT starting in middle school and as a result have gotten really high scores as a junior when they took it. I’m definitely going to read a lot more (like you said, as much as I can), but I doubt that studying once a week or something would hurt, so I think I’ll try to study for it, too.

You have your priorities messed up

Don’t worry about it too much
it is what it is

trust

That’s what I was getting back in 9th grade. You are fine.

@cornetking222: out of curiosity, what did you get in your junior year? (by the way, thanks for all the posts, guys).

i think its great that you’re starting early(im a freshman and i have similiar scores-1990(790M 620W 580CR)) where my math is a lot better than cr/w. I think its a matter of practice makes perfect, you kno? I think just practice over the summer breaks and every/ every other weekend up to the testing date and u shud be fine.

SAT now has score choice. You don’t have to submit any score that you don’t want to.

Stop “feeling like there’s so much other stuff to do,” and start reading more books. You have two years to read 45 REAL books - - now get busy reading!

I got around a 2250. I am a slow learner though, and many on this forum have improved at faster rates.

You’re already way ahead of the curve. Don’t get too stressed out about this.

Hey I don’t blame you, if I were smarter in the 9th grad I would have studied. All I did was watch TV and play games that really wasn’t productive. Anyway start learning as much vocab words as possible. Study a dictionary if you have the time. (Unabridged)

you’re right on track to do very well

keep it up

I’m in 9th grade too. I got: 740M 740 CR 690 W (11 essay). How can I master grammar? I feel pretty solid on everything else

read a grammar handbook would help you with modifiers, parallelism, etc. If you cannot afford one, the Blue Book has grammar tips/lessons.

@iambenk: check out sparknotes.com for grammer and such for the writing section. I see you as a future 2400er, gl studying :)

i am a freshman as well. i dont remember much about the SAT itself (which i took in 7th grade) other than that my scores were similar (math above all else). im not doing any special studying, but i AM putting myself in high-intensity english classes. honestly, i think thats the way to go. trying to study every week doesnt seem very productive, but being forced by ur classes to learn similar things daily might.

I didn’t take the SATs until junior year, and I got a 2370. I also never prepared for them. Don’t stress, you’re obviously smart and you’ll do fine. While reading is important, I’ve learned from the experinces of my friends that extracurriculars are far more important to get into colleges than getting crazy scores on the SAT’s. I know multiple people who didn’t get into any Ivies, though they had perfect SAT scores.
