A bad grade in math.. can I still transfer to u of m?

I want to transfer to university of michigan - ann arbor.

I got a C in calculus last semester and i'm a sophomore in a community college.
rest of my grades are looking good - they are all A's and B's. I have about 3.5 GPA.
I want to transfer into LSA, and a depeartment that doesn't require much math.

I did pretty bad in high school, but it was because I had family problems. I've gotten 24 ACT and about 3.0 GPA in high school.

How bad will one C look on a transcript? Do you think I still have a chance?

You probably would have struggled to get in without that C. A 3.6 from a community college isn’t all that impressive. As a CC student, you should probably have at least a 3.7 if not higher to have a realistic chance. Your high school grades and ACT won’t really matter at this point. Michigan won’t even look at them if you will have at 55 credits completed by the time you finish two years. However, with a 3.5 GPA from a CC, your chances are not very good. You may need to look elsewhere. I’m sorry for seeming so harsh but I’m just trying to be honest.

If I get it up to 3.7 with summer school and next semester, will the C in calculus not matter anymore?

I can’t say it won’t matter, however, I can say that your overall body of work will allow you to be competitive in spite of that C. It certainly doesn’t look good but Michigan won’t reject an applicant strictly because of one bad grade, especially if that class has nothing to do with your major. Michigan cares most about GPA and credits for transfer admissions. Essays and ECs matter but are of secondary importance. They can, at most, get a borderline student in, they cannot make up for a weak GPA. I think your best shot might be to work hard next semester and in summer school and then have your transfer app considered for the Winter term, if you are not admitted for Fall 2012. Michigan has this easy process where all you have to do is e-mail them and they’ll move you transfer app to a different semester. Good luck and Go Blue!
