A Bad Grade in Sophomore Gym

I’m sort of freaking out right now because of 2nd semester Sophomore gym: It seems I will be getting an 88% average for the year due to absences during the third marking period which they take away points for. I take all honors and AP except for regular Precalculus, and I should have all A’s besides a B in Honors Chemistry. I’ve talked to my teacher and done everything I can, but in the end he was unwilling to bump me up the 2 points to an A. This will bring my UW GPA from a 3.85 to a 3.79. What sort of impact do you think this will have on my admission chances to colleges like Boston U, Wesleyan, or USC? Also, it’s worth noting that for Junior Year I’m taking Gym and Health over the summer online so that I can fit a study hall into my schedule and still keep the electives I want. This has always been the plan but do you think now that I’ve gotten a B in gym it will seem like avoiding the class?

No, It sounds like a fine schedule choice.

Relax. It will have no effect on your admission chances. And schools won’t care whether you took gym in junior year or not. They will only care about what you actually take junior year.

Gym plays literally no role in admissions.

Agreed (as long as you pass). I also think it’s time for a reality check - and 88 is not a “bad grade.”

I don’t think it will matter, but you can see what skipping just a few classes did to your gpa. I have a friend who is very smart but just didn’t complete a lot of homework assignments, especially in sophomore and junior year. It came back to bite him as he had a very high ACT but didn’t get directly admitted to some engineering schools and didn’t get the highest merit awards. If he’d just done more of the homework…

Don’t skip gym. The only power gym teachers have over you is the grade.

Agree that a gym grade won’t matter. But hopefully you have learned a lesson about the importance of showing up to class – this is critical not only in HS but throughout your college career as well.

And can you really take gym online? Seems like you should be out doing something physical, not sitting at a computer.

In our local HS school district, yes, you’re allowed to take an online PE class thru a local CC. But the student uses their phone with an app that tracks their physical activity (GPS). 3 hours/week for 15-16 weeks, I believe, plus quizzes on subject material provided by the instructor.
