Here is an essay I wrote to prepare for the October 2013 SAT:

Assignment: Should leaders be judged according to how well they treat people?

Leaders should be judged, at least to a certain degree, on how well they treat people. With mass murderers like Stalin and Hitler out there who treated others as inferior, useless beasts, it is evident that one cannot rule successfully without treating society in a reasonable manner. Although this isn't the only factor that should determine a leader's reputation, it should be considered nonetheless.

In a modern-day example, President Barack Obama is renowned for his inspiring speeches about how he is going to turn America around. He has had a lot of success, most of it based on his charasmatic and his fair treatment of others. In a public opinion poll, 76% of Americans thought that Obama is treating the citizens with respect and dignity. In a similar study, 73% of Americans were satisfied with Obama's performance in office. Although the correlation between these two studies is uncertain, it is highly likely that Obama's good treatment of Americans has benefitted his reputation. Although this doesn't mean that the public is justified for judging Obama based on his treatment of Americans, it does mean that Americans do, in fact, consider that as a factor in determining Obama's success as the President. There is no reason why this should be seen as a bad thing. Although a President has many more duties than to simply treat people fairly, it is one of his responsibilities in order to continue as President. Judging him for all of his characteristics is necessary to obtain a holistic opinion of Obama's success as the President.

In my own life, my math teacher, Mr. Pills, has probably been one of the most histarical teachers in the history of my education. His job as a teacher is not only to instruct the class, but also to make learning the best experience as possible. Just like President Obama, Mr. Pills does his best to fulfill all of his duties, one of which is to engage the class. He is able to get the attention of a bunch of teenagers by actually respecting us and considering education from our perspective. I value his treatment of our class, and I think it is just important as other aspects of learning.

The way that one treats others is, indeed, a significant portion of the reputation of a leader; without it, a leader would not carry out his job.
