A Big White Envelope Just Arrived!!

My D2 just got a big 8.5 x 11 white envelope in the mail. She's not home; she's in school where she belongs. I don't dare open it. She might get mad at me for doing so, but I can see through the envelope and can read "Welcome to Penn State" on what looks like a booklet of some kind. Is this an admission to UP or to a branch campus? Are the envelopes different if you are admitted to UP? The suspense is killing me!

My daughter's envelope has the word "Congratulations" written on the lower portion of the outside envelope. She was admitted to UP back in December.

Plainsman, when you write does this mean "UP" are you referring to the University of Pennsylvania? I hope I am not being totally ignorant here, but aren't UP and Penn State two different schools? It seems your daughter has been admitted to Penn State, so congrats on that, but this isn't an envelope from UP.

UP means University Park (PSU's main campus)

UP =University Park -that's the main campus...hope its an accept...I heard they used fat envelopes for denials with invites to other Penn State campuses. Isn't that mean?

Thanks for the clarificaton on UP (and I should have noticed the thread title, where it directly says University Park:-)

Read this ...It will keep you busy until your daughter gets home!
by the way...Congrats! :)

Yes!!!! She got in to UP for fall 2009!!!! She didn't even list a major on her app. Her letter acknowledges her undecided status. I'm happier than she is! PSU is cheap compared to the other schools she's applied to! An outstanding education at a cut-rate price! That's what I want to hear! I'm a happy Dad!

Now, if I can just convince her to go to PSU...instead of Cornell or Wesleyan, I'll really be happy. Yessirreebob!

Congrats Plainsman.......

Congrats!!! I was really happy too when my kid got into the bargain schools!

Since PSU is so numbers-oriented, could you share her stats, please?

BTW, CONGRATS!!! :D

Congratulations to all. my son is a freshman at UP. I remember when he was accepted last year. it was January 24. but he found out online first. he called me at work from school. He got into many great schools for what he wanted to do but picked PSU. Luckily for us the price is not too bad but we are from NJ so its out of state tuition with not a penny of aid. except a few student loans. he has been to most of the football games, baskeball games and volleyball games. Unbeatable school spirit for sure. We have been out there several times. His classes are going well too. this semember he has a 700 student macro economics class. he says about 50% of the kids drink during the week and 90% on weekends. he's in a substance free dorm-- lifehouse but it is not what he expected. kids are in that dorm more for religious reasons then health. he's in it because he cares about his health and is not a drinker in anyway. but good luck to all your kids. if you have questions about the school if they go just post a note. you'll get lots of feedback.

collegemom17--we are from NJ too, and son was accepted to PS main, also.

He's looking at other schools (accepted at U TX Austin, among a few others).

Wondering about that drinking thing...was your son able to find non-drinking activities?

Also--wondered how often your son came home? One reservation I have about UT is that it's 1200 miles away---if son were sad or something, it would be very hard to come home for a weekend just to chill. Then again, if it seems like even Penn State kids don't come home all that often, maybe the longer distance to TX wouldn't be that much of a difference. (convoluted reasoning! lol).

Congrats to your D plainsman. She is going to love it.

Thanks jec7483. I hope so. She's kind of shy, though, and not a football/basketball/or any ball fan. She doesn't drink or smoke, which probably limits her options, but that's okay. Like father, like daughter maybe. I made it through four years of college and graduate school without drinking a drop or inhaling a puff, and we're not religious.

Jolynne Smyth: Look at it this way: Coming home from Austin means taking an airplane; coming home from State College is nothing but a car ride. What? Four hours from the Jersey state line? And Jersey is not very big.

Sounds like good news, though I couldn't imagen how someone could attend a school they didn't apply to. Say she was transfer to a branch school... I wonder how many people still keep the school a option.

Plainsman--thanks, that is true (plane vs 4 hr car ride). Son really likes the idea of TX, though (we're going to visit for first time, soon). Just not sure how '1200 miles away for 4 years' would play, in reality. I can't blame him for wanting warmer weather, though!

jolynne...my s is a junior and only comes home on long breaks (or for special events like going to a Philly playoff game or parade!).
There's lots of drinking at PSU...but that would be true of Texas too. In fact, true at most colleges although state schools with big sports scenes tend to have more drinking going on.
I know non-drinkers at PSU who have found their niche.
And there are those who drink on weekdays, but they tend to drop out after a year or are in super easy majors.
Plainsman - congrats to your D! I know many PSU students who were not football fans when they started but were quickly converted. It's a fun time.

You really would choose PS/UP over Cornell?

My son chose PSU over Cornell. He loves PSU and has had fantastic summer internships and will graduate with zero debt. Wonderful decision!
