A Chance for a Junior

So I'm a junior and NYU is my dream school...and I just want to know if I stand a chance. I will be applying ED.

I'm going to be a little hypothetical with the GPA and SAT so please take that into consideration.

GPA: 3.0 but will try to raise to a 3.4. This is where it's going to kill me. Freshman year I took AP World and math honors and those two classes killed my GPA. I've taken all honors and AP's since freshman year. I improved a bit sophomore year and I've improved dramatically junior year. My school doesn't recalculate the GPA until the end of junior year.

SAT: Hypothetically 2100+

School doesn't rank.

10th - AP Psychology (5)

11th - APUSH (likely 4)
- AP Studo Art 2D (likely 5)

EC:

Secretary of National Art Honor Society

National Forensics League member w/distinction
~ Have won numerous awards locally and state.

3 years of French club

Volunteering at local hospital

Huge, huge, dedication to photography. I have a portfolio on my website. I think this is where I can shine and show NYU 'something'. I plan to hand in a portfolio.
~ Have won a few awards.

Over 1000 hours working at fathers pharmacy since 8th grade.

Recommendations: My French teacher will write an excellent formal rec. She's like my close friend and told me herself she'll write a killer rec.

Essay: Assume that my essay is excellent (particularly because I am a devout orator in speech & debate)

As you can see, I haven't taken any SAT II's yet but am planning on taking chemistry and US history. But I might just want to do the new NYU admission where you only turn in SAT and 2 AP scores. However, I might just hand in everything including the SAT II scores.

Also if it matters, I want to apply to Gallitin but I'll be happy even if I do get LSP'ed. Cause hey, either way, it's still NYU.

So yeah, be as brutally honest as necessary.

Anyone please? I’d really appreciate it.

it’s just hard to chance juniors… look at it. i mean, you’ve got LIKELY this, HOPE to raise gpa, etc. wait until you’re a senior to be chanced, please.

raise gpa a lot! think about taking more aps maybe?

raise the GPA ALOT while taking AP’s

Yeah that’s what I’m trying to do and so far I am. First quarter I ended with like a 3.6.

AP’s for next year:

AP Chem
AP Statistics
AP Micro
AP Lit
AP Calc AB

Is your listed GPA weighted or unweighted?

Weighted. My school doesn’t calculated unweighted but even then, my counselor said it would be the same.

Honestly I think it’ll be extremely tough to raise your GPA that much in one year.

I know it’s extremely tough but I’m honestly trying. Even if I don’t get to the 3.4, it’ll show a dramatic improvement. I mean I’ve seen people on the Accepted/Rejected thread get into CAS with 3.3’s albeit with high SAT scores. The same French teacher that’s writing my rec wrote one for a girl at my school and she got accepted to Gallatin a few days ago with decent grades. And from what I know Gallatin is easier to get into, depending on what type of person he or she is. I’m positive I’m that kind of person. I’m not being overconfident, it’s just that I know, you know?

I guess I was wrong posting this because all it would do is satisfy my own hope. Better not get my hopes up then.

even if YOUR school doesn’t do unweighted, NYU will reweigh it according to their standards.

uhhh especially if a 3.0 is weighted… things aren’t looking so good. i’m sorry, but the best unweighted i’ve seen get in is a 3.4, and that’s with AMAZING scores.

It depends on how your school does GPA. A 3.0 is an 86 at best (according to CollegeBoard) and a 3.4 is about a 90. Raising your GPA 4 points in one year would be literally impossible in my school (as in, if you get all 100’s, still ain’t happening).

That being said, if you can bump your GPA up to the high 80s and score a 1400/1600, you have a shot. Or take the ACT and get whatever is considered very good on that…

Well, I got into Gallatin with a 3.3 but it was unweighted, and I go to an intense high school.

Gallatin is supposedly easier with stats, but that still means that your essay and the rest of your application need to be stellar. I would remind you that just because you know that you are right for Gallatin, doesn’t mean NYU necessarily does. You don’t have to worry about this for a while, but when it comes time to do your app, make sure you show NYU that you’re right for Gallatin.

Yes thank you. I know what you mean. But as my guidance counselor said before, my GPA would be more or less the same if NYU themselves took out all the elective classes. My high school is very competitive too. We send roughly 15 to 20 kids to Ivy’s each year.

I’ll have the whole year to think of writing a good essay. I’m going to make the most of it.

And thanks esnyujind. That’s basically my goal for junior year.
