A CollegeBoard mistake can cost you money

So I have been waiting for my scores forever. I was getting anxious because I needed to know my scores for my upcoming orientation in order for them to place me in the right class. I had to eventually fork over $8 for grades by phone.

I came back yesterday to find my scores in my mailbox. However, there was a note on there from my neighbor- turns out he got the scores because of the wrong address! Annoyed that my scores had been waiting in my neighbors mailbox all this time, I go inside and open up the envelope (even though I already knew the scores). And alas, another surprise - my scores had been sent to the wrong college!!! Needless to say, I was furious - I was certain that I had filled in the right school code and I was not willing to pay $15 for them to send a piece of paper.

I called Collegeboard today and spoke to a representative. I explained the situation, and he said I would have to pay to send off my scores. I said that even though I may have put in the wrong code, I still wrote "University of Pittsburgh - Pittsburgh" above the line, so that someone should have at least seen that. He goes on to say that the Scantron scans in whatever code is bubbled in. I still did not believe that I was wrong and refused to pay money for this. He offered to go get my answer sheet for me (I guess they have them in a database somewhere?) and check.

Lo and behold, I DID put the right college code and so he said that they would send my scores for free!

So what I'm trying to get across with this story is never let Collegeboard try to take your money when they don't deserve it. Don't let them take your money when THEY are the ones that have made the mistake. Their "Scantron" makes mistakes, so if you ever feel that you've been done wrong, call them up! You've forked over hundreds of dollars in SAT tests, SAT test preparation, score reports, and $80 for every AP test (if you go to private school) so the least they can do is treat you fairly!

Remember- you deserve it! :)

I go to public school and paid 80 per test : /

Oh really? I always thought it was just private school kids. Sorry about that!

yeah i go public and i pay 80 for the test.

Dude, College Board is such a scam. They have such a hold on college matters. It ****es me off. I have already paid them a few hundred, but I wouldn't be surprised if it has surpassed a grand.

I don't think it's unfair treatment, so much as it was an honest mistake-machines (and people, of course) are fallible, too, you know. :/ You CCers sure seem to give CollegeBoard a hard time! :p

Well in my opinion, I think the whole thing is kinda unfair to begin with. I mean seriously- paying $15 for them to send a piece of paper? They take advantage of us. And yes, even though we chose to take all of those tests and such, what real choice do we have? Do we really want to risk getting into a good college because we refuse to take AP tests or SATs? Plus its unfair for kids who don't have enough money to pay for the exams, etc. But thats a whole new discussion that I'm sure has already been covered a million times on CC, so I won't start.

Either way, I simply wanted to point out to people that you should always speak up for yourself when you think a mistake has been made, whether is was on a AP test, SAT test, whatever. If you have paid good money for a test (or whatever it is), then you should get your money's worth. I wanted to post this so that maybe I can help others in the same situation.

^^^An understandable/noble action-very much appreciated, I'm sure! [btw, sorry if I came off a little "mean" in my post-I just notice there seems to be a great number of CCers who bash CB-rather unfairly, in my opinion (I'm not saying you are one of those people.)] I agree with you-if someone feels he/she is being wronged, then he/she should certainly speak up. (and yes, I think CB does overcharge for some of the services it provides; that's life, I guess. :/)
