ITHACA, N.Y. (AP) A student at Cornell University was killed in a fire early Saturday morning, according to a university spokesman.

The fire was reported at 3:18 a.m. at a house on the edge of the universitys north campus. The cause of the fire was under investigation.

Fire officials were not releasing the victim's identity pending notification of the family.

A firefighter, whose identity was not released, was injured when he fell through stairs to the cellar while battling the blaze. He was treated at a local hospital and released

Sadly, these things happen, not only at Cornell but at other schools too. I read that a Univ of Md student also died this year in a fire in an off campus apartment. Very tragic.

Some sensitivity here please. A precious young life was lost. Think about your families if something tragic happened to one of you and they read some indifferent and coldhearted comments on an internet forum. Thank you Odyssey for expressing sympathy and compassion..

This was an off-campus fire, where fire codes are not as strict as university housing and students have a lot more freedom with what they are allowed to do in their residences (i.e., use smoke detectors, burn candles, smoke, etc). The cause of the fire has not been announced yet.

Wow thank you. When I read it I thought it was such a sensitive topic that I shouldn't post and then later I just read people rambling about a curse and stupid stuff. This is a human life...

this is so tragic. i just can't believe it. a friend of mine died this weekend as well... why do things like this have to happen? i'm sure i'm not making much sense but i'm still pretty shook up.
