My roommate and I are meeting today, and we have a couple questions (we are in Ehringhaus):
1) is cable provided on campus? Do most people have TVs?
2) if we don't have a/c, does that mean we won't have heat either? maybe that's a stupid question...
3) in suite style dorms, do they clean it weekly?

1) I think cable is provided, but double check. I wouldn’t bring a TV unless you’re into video games or something, because you can watch almost anything online and you probably won’t have time to just aimlessly watch TV for hours on end. Plus, there are TVs in most common rooms, and I think it’s more fun to crash there with a bunch of people.
2) No idea. Buy fans! Lots and lots of fans to keep the air circulating.
3) If there are 8 people per bathroom, then the cleaning people clean the bathroom daily (except not on weekends, I think).

You do get cable - the list of channels can be found on the ITS website. Most people I know have a TV. Sometimes it’s nice just to put it on in the morning and listen to the news/weather while you get ready. Or at least that’s what my roomie and I like to do.

Yes, you have heat. They can’t let anybody freeze to death.

ArtemisDea is right - they clean every day but not on the weekends. By Monday things are usually kind of nasty, so you can’t wait for the cleaning people to show up!

At CTOPS housing folks said that if the bathroom can be entered from the hall, or a communal area - then they are cleaned. If it is a bathroom shared by two rooms, four people …and the doors only connect to the rooms … it is the responsibility of the roomies to clean it. Meaning, the housekeepers will not go through someone’s room to get to a bathroom to clean it.

KansasGirl is correct about the bathroom cleaning.

Thanks everyone!

What about mini fridges and microwaves? Does unc allow those?

List of appliances allowed. Mini-fridges and microwaves are allowed. And I have never heard of a room that was documented for using over 1800 watts, and I know a guy with a 50 inch tv and surround sound in his room.

[Electrical Appliances | UNC Chapel Hill Housing and Residential Education](http://housing.unc.edu/residence-life/your-room/electrical-appliances.html)

My son’s room had a (at the time large) 34" TV with surround sound and was the place to be for movie nights…:)

You really don’t need a powerful microwave and there’s really no reason to get one that exceeds 1000 watts. You don’t need a mini fridge with freezer…they need to be defrosted which is a pain and the freezers don’t work all that well anyway…besides you can get all the ice you need in the kitchen on your floor.

What about irons? Do they have them in the laundry room, or do you have to bring your own? It’s not on either list.

My friends gave me this spray product where you can supposedly just pull them wrinkles out, but I have some clothes where ironing is unavoidable.

You should bring your own just in case (I am) if it isn’t an Enhancement that you can just check-out (if you know what I’m talking about). :)

I actually do not quite get what you are saying. D:

[Enhancements | UNC Chapel Hill Housing and Residential Education](http://housing.unc.edu/residence-life/your-room/enhancements.html)

I don’t know where they keep their list of enhancements, but it could include an iron. :)

!! That’s amazing! I sure hope it does! 4000 items? There’s gotta be ONE iron. That made me really excited. I had no idea about this, and it’s great because my mom was just like, “wait, what about vacuums?”

yeah, I know, its pretty awesome! and it all costs $2 for unlimited checking out of items! :)

One little dampener on the enhancements. There are 4000 items on campus, but divide that amongst 17 communities, and you have much less. Granted, you still have a great selection, but it varies from community to community.

I wouldn’t buy anything like a vacuum. The enhancements ones aren’t the best, but they work. I’m not sure if they have irons or not though. That you might need to bring on your own.

Enhancements is a great system though. I have used it a lot. And as a word of advice, make friends with your RAs. They can usually help you find a way to get what you need.

Would it be silly to bring my swifter sweeper vacuum?

I have an iron/mini ironing board, but I never really use them (I just like to have them with me just in case). I also have a Dirt Devil. I’ve never used enhancements, but I know people who use them a lot. It’s definitely convenient to have some kind of vacuum you can keep in your room though!

I have a question about a closet scenario.

I already have this shoe holder that hangs on the door with little pockets, but the Craige closets don’t have doors. Do you think it would work if I tried to hang this in the closet? My actual closet is about the size of the dorm closets, so I can see with a few of those Wonder Hanger type deals, I’d have room for clothes and this.

Does this sound like an okay idea? I have a bin where I could put shoes under my bed, but I’d like to free up that space for other storage, and it’d be nice to use this shoe hanger since I already have it.

^ could you just get command hooks and rig it up so that the shoe thing was hanging on the wall next to your closet?
