Housing question - do all the newer dorms have cable, phone, wireless

DD saw that some dorms listed some of these as available and some did not.

anyone in the know know??

very important questions … i know!!

of course, she has not completely decided, so she is not able to choose a room just yet anyway.

From what I have read and experienced, all the dorms have cable, most, if not all dorms have wireless internet (the one or two that might not are not ones typically chosen by honors students, IIRC), and every dorm except the Ridgecrests have local land line phone service. Every dorm room and dorm building has high speed internet (usually very fast) and i don’t know of many students who actually use their land line telephone much.

thanks for that info.

does each bedroom have cable? or just the living area of the suite?

Each bedroom has cable and a cable box. UA may be switching cable providers next year, but currently one gets a pretty good channel lineup (notably excluding Bravo, but including On Demand). Additional channels can be purchased from the cable provider (currently Comcast). The common area of the suite has a cable jack, but no cable box. The cable box in the room may be attached in a way that makes it difficult to remove the box from the wall without a special tool (supposedly to discourage people paying for premium channels from taking the boxes to other rooms).

ok . good to know.

why would one not be able to take their premium channels to another room to watch? sounds reasonable to me! : ) i would imagine also that someone has the special tool!

: )

AFAIK, it’s more of the company wanting both rooms to buy the premium channels. Tools can be found if you don’t want to call the company to get the box moved to the common room or at least off your wall if you don’t have a TV. We did take a survey about improvements to the cable service, international channels and laptop TV were discussed.

Do students get basic cable at no charge, but pay for premium channels if they want them?

Yes, students receive basic cable.

^^

Others can correct me if I’m wrong, but it seems that the basic cable programming still includes a decent package and it also includes a Bama movie channel (or something like that)… Maybe SEA_Tide can enlighten more on that. I could be wrong.

It’s a sort of expanded basic package that should include On Demand. This may change, but by premium channels I’m referring to things like HBO, very specific sports and international channels, PPV movies, and stuff like that. If it’s numbered under 100 in the channel lineup, we probably get it.

Don’t you get channels like…ESPN? I know that numbering systems differ between providers…but ESPN is 400 in our lineup.

In case anyone is interested, I found the channel listings on UA’s website.

So, the res halls get the first two groups for free, right? Basic Cable and Expanded Basic.

I think that’s kind of what it says: Full Basic includes Limited Basic and Expanded Basic.

^^^That sounds correct to me.

OK, I promised myself I wouldn’t get sucked into this thread, but apparently I’ve got no self-control. Anyone out there know if students have taken the plunge and ordered the HD cable service (and, if so, what it costs)?

It’s $5-$15 a month extra for homes IIRC, so I’d assume it’s similar for the dorms. Comcast is on campus at the beginning of the semester to take people’s orders for additional channels.

haha! who knew this thread would have a life!!
: )

'Twas a guilty pleasure to have participated, Mike. Thanks! :)

Is it really sad that I just checked the list and said “Oh good! Golf channel & Food network…D will be ok ;)?”

i was a little embarrassed to even post this question … but kids have questions … and the answers are readily available. why not ask!!
