so i have a question even though i'm not going off 2 college this fall... do many people here have a tv in their dorm room? i kno common rooms all have TVs but i really don't like the idea of being forced to watch "are you smarter than a 5th grader" (assuming they havent canceled it by next year) on a common room tv when i wud rather watch the news or sports. also- if any of u do have tvs- do u have cable and if so i'm assuming you have to pony up the cash 4 it or do colleges provide that service? i kno it may be a stupid question but i'd appreciate some input. thanks

First, not all common rooms have televisions. I just spent a week at a college that didn't have any "public" sets, other than in the student center.

Cable is pretty much standard now, though there's often an additional fee that you need to pay. It also varies from dorm to dorm in most cases. Check the individual amenities offered by each dorm when making your selections.

At my school, cable is included in room and board. Pretty much everyone in my dorm had a tv in their room, although we did all gather in the lobby to watch tv or movies together sometimes, since it was easier than trying to fit 10 people in someone's room. We had a "House" night one night, and me and my roommate used to watch Lost in the lobby with a couple other people. Some of the other girls had a Grey's Anatomy night for the finale. But pretty much everyone has tv's in their room too.

Do they provide TV's too? Because if it is one of those tiny ones I've seen in pics of dorms and stuff before, I'd rather just bring my own to hook up to the cable they provide.

Which college are you talking about?

Almost everyone I know at my school has at least one tv in their room, one of my friends has two (but we're in apartment style dorms). Cable is included in our housing costs.

Everyone I knew had a TV in their room (myself included). I'd definitely recommend bringing one.
At my school, cable is included with our housing. You should call and ask what the situation is at your school.

A lot of schools will tell you whether or not they have cable, and some even provide a listing of channels. Check the websites.

I don't think any school would provide television sets for you. Usually (at least at my school), cable and telephone service come activated by default, and if you don't want to pay for them you can call and have either one cancelled in the first few weeks.

i go to harvard, and for freshman only the common rooms have cable. you can't even opt to pay for it and have it in your room. we did have a tv in our room, though. we used it to watch dvds mostly. and the common room thing wasn't bad. everyone generally watched the same shows (House, Lost, Grey's Anatomy) so it was never an issue for me. but there was this one kid who liked to watch some tv show that came on at the same time as Grey's. he was once threatened with physical violence if he didn't leave the common room.

Everyone at my school had their own TV. Only the main common room for each quad had a TV (which was a big screen badass), but the rest of the common rooms were for studying and study groups mostly. Cable is included in room and board and at least for us, it has a pretty decent amount of channels.. plus several foreign language and news channels.

Everyone I know/knew at my school had a TV in their rooms regardless of how much television they actually watched.
