A couple of Gen Ed questions

I only need to take a few Gen Ed classes since I have ~40 credit hours from AP. I need a Communications class and a Cultural Foundation.

For Comm. my options are Intro to Comm, Fundamental of Oral Comm, and Fund of Tech Presentations. Is one of these a class that I won't have to give speeches in? I know it's a "necessary life skill" and whatnot, I'm able to speak in front of an audience just fine - I just really hate it. I'm a Comp Sci major and I know they like the Tech Presentations but it's not required and I'll probably wind up changing majors anyways.

For the Cultural I'm looking at Cinema Survey, Survey of Rock, and Intro to Philosophy (if there's an easier option than any of these please point it out). This is really not the kind of thing I like - I loathe history and any type of art that isn't on my iPod so I just want whatever is easiest and has the least amount of tests/research papers.

Thanks

I took fundamentals of oral communication last semester and we had to present 2 speeches in front of the class on various topics. If you’re thinking about switching majors, definitely take intro to communications!!! I know 100% that Intro to Communications does not require you to give speeches, all you have to do is read the book and take tests on communication.

I also took cinema survey last fall semester, and believe me when I tell you this, it is the most easiest class I ever took! You show up to class, watch a movie and then every other week you take a 10-15 minute quiz with 10-15 questions! You should definitely take that as well. At the end you take one final test. Easiest A I ever earned.

Almost every major suggests taking 1603 or 1608 over COM 1000, because COM 1000 is literally pointless. It can even be more work if you take it with certain professors (I know one requires you to do Junior Achievement). Moreover, 1603 and 1608 look better for Grad School if you are going to end up there. (It won’t make a huge difference unless they have to nitpick between applications though.)

Cinema Survey is obviously a joke. History of Rock requires a research paper if you do it honors…if you take it online with Weremchuk or however his name is spelled, it’s a joke. Philosophy with Jones is actually a joke.

@Cheerluv: Who did you take Cinema Survey with?

@The Ticks: The only COM 1000 professor left is David Young. Do you know if he’s one of the ones who it’s more work for? And I don’t know what Junior Achievement is.

Jeffrey Lehman for cinema survey
