Yikes, Columbia! They had better be able to wash linens on campus! LOL. I draw the line at laundry.

Of course they can wash anything at all in their dorms. There are machines that allow you to load money onto laundry cards which you then use on the washing machines and dryers. My own daughter has a laundry room almost directly across from her dorm room. It's more convenient than going into the basement at home.

I don't do laundry so my question does seem kind of stupid. :D
I mean, is the machine big enough for washing linens? I know for comforter, you can't wash them at home, you have to wash at a bigger washing machine. This question is in reference to the following comment:

but isn't it better to wash all the linens before using?

do you get the CSI from USC?

It sucks in Vancouver, the only place that carries XL is Linen and Things and they have no choices and expensive.

I'd just second the suggestion of ordering online, bmom. Have the bulky stuff delivered to USC. If you are still concerned about washing things (and again, I must say I am one mom who is happy to hand over the washing responsibilities to my s--if for no other reason than he may begin to appreciate how nice he's had it at home ;) ) it may be easier to find laundry facilities near school (all the kids will need same, right?) than to pack all that bulky stuff and bring it. Not to mention the expense since airlines are stingy about free extra baggage and will charge for bringing along boxes.

I think USC did give us a brochure from CSI, or else I picked it up at Orientation. But I did the sign up online and will try to post the website here:

CSI College Student Insurance Home

If that doesn't work for some reason, just google collegestudentinsurance, all one word, and you'll find it.

This is what i found in the brochure that could be useful to someone out there.

The idea of renting a safety deposit box for a passport is excellent. The vast majority of students have never had to deal with the complications of dealing with replacing a lost/stolen passport. In my opinion this would be a small amount of money well spent.

Not sure how bad the theft situation is on campus, but getting a small safe in the room may not be a good idea because it could invite someone to walk out the room with the safe -- unless housing bolts the safe to the wall or some other fixture. For $50/year or less one should be able to rent a safety deposit box wherever they have a bank account.
