I'm going to orientation next week and I have been looking through the course selection and I have two questions at this time for anyone that can answer them.

1) I will be a member of the honors college and was wondering if taking a HON course is a good idea? I am already planning to take an honors math course and honors CS course and I was wondering what type of time commitment I should expect from an HON course.

2) About that math course I mentioned in the above question...I will be taking the placement Calc exam at orientation and I'm wondering if that can place me in S212 or just M213...I also took the AP Calc BC exam and I'm expecting a 4 but as we all know the scores don't come in til July sooo...also I'm assuming it is a good idea for me to take second semester Calc regardless of the AP result since I only took an AB class and taught myself the rest of the material for the test?

In answer to your question #2 above, I agree that since you don’t know the score right away, it makes it difficult to know which math class to take. Maybe you are supposed to register for two different classes and then drop the one that isn’t applicable (don’t really know).

I suggest you ask your counselor at the orientation. This is exactly why they have an orientation session–to answer questions such as this one.

That’s an interesting idea, Calcruzer, of possibly registering for two classes and dropping one if it turns out it’s not applicable. My D wasn’t sure if she should take ENG131 the first semester since her AP score could potentially test her out of it. But it is a pre-req for Business Communications (right?), which she’d like to take at the Kelley LLC the second semester. Maybe she should go ahead and register for ENG131 plus another course and drop ENG if she can when her scores come in July. I’ll suggest that she discuss this with a counselor at orientation in a few weeks.

Tulare, you can find your daughter’s language and math placement scores the same day she takes the tests. I drove my son to orientation last year, he took the foreign language and math tests and was finished about one o’clock. We drove home (about forty minutes) and checked Onestart about an hour after we got home and the scores were already there. Follow this path to get to the orientation placement scores:

Onestart>SIS>My Academics and Grades>View Test Credit

To be able to take Finite and Calculus you will see this message in the “Equivalent Score” column: TEST-BL 99MATH01.

You can do the “enrollment shopping cart” on OneStart after you find out what the placement scores are. It is sometimes possible to make a good schedule if you aim for low demand classes; the honors classes and direct admit classes tend not to fill up quickly. You can check the real time schedule of classes and get the exact number of seats left in each class. Here is a direct link to the real time enrollment numbers if you want to get an idea how to use it.

Thanks for the info and links bthomp. The tricky part is waiting for the AP scores which won’t arrive until sometime in July, well after her orientation. If her AP English score is a 4 or 5 she understands she won’t need to take English 131. But if she doesn’t get a 4 or 5 then she’ll need to take Eng131 the first semester in order to take Bus Comm second semester. So does she go ahead and enroll for 131 and then drop it if she gets high enough AP scores? Her current thought is to register for it plus another course and drop one of them depending on the AP score, assuming that’s even an option. It’s been added to the list of things to discuss with the adviser at orientation, but if anyone else has thoughts/advice it would always be appreciated.
