A couple questions for those who know!

i have 2 questions-

a. i scored a 2030 on my SAT, (730v 670m 630w). i feel pretty comfortable with it, and i feel with a 2030 i got a shot at ucla and ucsd, but, would raising it 50-100 pts. greatly increase my chances at admittance to these two schools? like seriously would a 2080 look alot better than a 2030? i just don’t want to waste MY forty bucks.

b. The uc website says i can still take the SATs all the way up to december 4, which is actually after the filing date of november 30. how does this all work? how do i send in my new scores after i have already sent in my application?

any response would be awesome. thanks in advance.

Think of it this way, you are getting mebbe a 3.75 instead of a 3.7 with that extra 50 pts

is that worth $40 to you?
more importantly, do you think you're willing to spend time? (trust me, the time you spend preparing is worth much more than $40)

honestly, getting an extra 50 points only helps you a little bit.
If I were on the borderline I'd mebbe take it again

Personally, I'd expect a 2100 from a UCLA student

believe me, i don't expect to get into ucla or ucsd with a 2030, although it is above average for both. thanx for the answer though.

My friend got into YALE and HARVARD and PRINCETON and CORNELL with a 2030 - 2050.

given the amount of time to prepare for the exam---you would be better off working on your essays/apps

I'd probably rec taking another shot at it. Since you received a 730 on the CR, you should be able to hit 700+ on W, and that's big at UCLA. Also, UCSD goes by a point system (on did in past years), so 70-80 more points would definitely help. Take the Dec administration and spend a few days working and thinking about the Writing section.

thanks bluebayou:

if anybody cares to answer...wouldn't my application essays and 4 on ap lit. balance out my low 630 on writing? i just can't believe colleges take the essay score so seriously. the first time i took the sat i scored the same on writing (630), with a 11/12 on the essay and a lower multiple choice score. the second time, (my current scores) i scored only a 9/12 on the essay but much higher on the multiple choice. the essay in my opinion is not a proper reflection. but my opinion really dosn't matter i guess.

teh UCs definitely DO take the W seriously -- they have to bcos they pushed for the new SAT. If you scored an 11 on the essay once, you can do it again. But, do list your AP scores in the Other section of the app. Since many Calif high schools don't offer many AP's, SAT scores are more important to adcoms. Of course, if your HS offers APs you should take the classes to bosst your strenght of schedule.

If you don't feel like you will have a score increase of over 50 points, you probably won't. In fact it's rare for most people to have a score increase of over 50 points. A 2080 and a 2030 looks almost exactly the same. I would say...don't waste your time and money. You may even score lower than you did previously. Also, 2030 is fine for UCSD / UCLA. It's around the average (no, really).
