Current students, what do you hate at UGA?

I am trying to decide between UNC and a nice scholarship and UGA, and no aid my home state flagship.....so would love to hear from you all about what you DONT like about UGA.....I am not a big football fan, will that drive me crazy? I am a baseball fanatic...how is the baseball team at UGA? How about the greek life? Do they dominate the campus scene? If I don't drink/party what is there to do around UGA? Any thoughts or advice are welcomed.

There's really not much I don't like about UGA, to be honest. UGA has surprised me in lots of ways. I was worried about UGA's party school reputation, but honestly, I think that reputation is really hyped up. You sound a bit like me, michelga, I don't really like football, and I definitely don't drink and party. But I don't feel out of place here. Football games are very exciting, and I've learned to love the atmosphere on game days. The campus is 100 times more alive, though it's always energetic. Sanford Stadium is really neat because it's open on one side and even if you don't have a ticket, you can watch some of the action. Athens is fun town, and there's plenty of things to do besides go out and drink. The restaurants are all pretty good and relatively cheap to fit a college student's budget, and there's lots of fun stores and venues to watch concerts and such. If you like music, Athens is probably your kind of place. A note on the Greek life, they constitute only about 20% of the student population here, but at first, it may seem like there's much more than that. I think that's just because many Greek students make themselves more visible on campus by organizing events and stuff, but you definitely don't have to go Greek and by no means do they dominate the social scene. Good luck with your decision! Try to look at all aspects of both UNC and UGA and try to visit both before deciding. Also, be smart and remember you're going to have to be happy to do well in school, so try to think about the whole picture and where you'll be most happy.

I think green7 made some excellent points, especially about Athens. Remember that there are only 6 football weekends a year; that's not too long to put up with the chaos. But honestly, it is not required that you be fanatical about football or the Greek system to "fit in" here. Although I wasn't spending every Friday and Saturday night in my apartment, I was also not the party-type of person, but found a lot of fun things to do. We have a wonderful gym here (if that's your thing) UGA may not be as racially diverse as some schools, but I think that it is very ideologically diverse. You will find people here that you can call your friends. I promise:)

To answer your question about baseball, this year hasn't been the best for us. Last year, we did make it to the College World Series, though. The softball team is pretty good year-after-year.

Good luck deciding between UNC and UGA. They are both great schools, so you are definitely in a win-win situation.

thanks guys. I was hoping you would hate something but....now you have made th decision harder. I think you are right win win here. I to appreciate all the insight.

thanks green7 i'm about the same way and i'm hoping to transfer into UGA next year.
