why is this helpful?

As a senior who has 10 schools on my list, I find it very interesting to read what a typical day at different colleges is like. I'm not going to base my opinion of any college off these accounts, but I really enjoy reading them as I think that what students chose to do with their time says a lot about the student body at a particular college.

i also do think these examples say a lot about the student body at a particular college, but one can't generalize, especially for a large university like where i go. at UCLA, you can get people who treat the place like a hardcore party school to people who treat it like a hardcore academic college, and it really runs the gamut!

Are there no parties and procrastination times at Olin?

Oliners are very good at procrastinating. That said, more than moderate procrastination would kill us. The workload is tough, and there are only so many all-nighters you can pull before it starts to get to you.

Ah, taht sounds like my kind of environment then.

I'll agree that Oliners are good at procrastinating. Take now, im doing laundry instead of work. and when i put that work thing in its more of a do a little work, talk to people who stop by, work, wander around, work in teams. Its not solid work, there is some change to it and it is interesting. You are working with others and it always is fun.
yes I just said work was fun.

I go to mass college of art so i thought i would share that experience. We really dont have any typical days, in fact you have a different class basically everyday of the week. and most people dont take friday classes as very few are even offered. I will just give an example of a classday...

8am-get up get ready email
845-walk to school
900-In the studios or class sometimes class from 9-12
1230-2 is lunch, studio time
2-5 there is either more studio time/study time or a class
5-11 i hang out at school a few times a week to work on projects and talk to people
-after that i go to the gym
then bed around 1am except before reviews and midterms then its much later if at all.
It can sound like alot of time in school but really classes only take up about
20 hours a week and the studio time is alot of work and alot of hanging out.

however, as a freshman two years ago, i was a total insominac. I would basically just sleep when ever i could durning the day and work all night. that makes life much harder i find.

Monday/Wednesday:
10:30 Wake up with a headache/hungover. Cook breakfast and make coffee.
11:00 is Econ Recitation on mondays, but I never go, so I'm at my dorm watching TV and drinking my first protein shake of the day.
12:00 Walk downstairs and get on the subway for my 1230 Islam class.
12:30-1:45 In class
2:00-3:30 Hit the gym at Union Square, then grab a shake
4-5 Walk around SoHo and the Village looking at clothing I cannot afford to buy and restaurants I can't afford to dine in.
5:30 The roommate gets home, we crack open beers and cook dinner.
6-7 Eat dinner watch, tv, bum around ect.
8 People might come over, or just drink with the roommate
10 Probably have a good buzz on by now, make the decision whether to pass out or go out and look for good drink specials i.e. $3 pints on wed on bleecker or loco tuesdays $2 coronas

Tuesday/Thursday:
8 Wake up with a headache and hangover, decide whether to go to my 9:30 Management class
If I go, get on the subway at 9, and will be in class from 930-1045. I'm back at my dorm at 11:15 and I nap until 1:00 at which point I have lunch and get on the subway for my 2:00 econ class.
If I don't go I sleep until 11 or 12 and I take my time, i.e. cooking breakfast and drinking coffee.
1:50 Scoff at the stupid picket line of TAs on strike and their inflatable rat (dont ask)
2-3:15 econ class, prof gives a 5 minute break in the middle of class which is hot
3:30-5 Gym (I have stat class during this time, but I never go. Also I had a recitation from 4:55-610 that was mandatory on thursdays, but the TA strike got this class cancelled which is hot)
5-6 Cook/eat dinner
7-9/10 Probably get some work done
9/10-12 Pregame (if thurs, prob just hit up some drink specials if tues)
12-4 Go out: bars, clubs, lounges (my personal fav), meet girls, maybe hit the slopes a bit

Friday: No class
Explore the city
Go to the gym
Sleep
Then go out again

So pretty much my life is a lot of drinking and working out, and very little going to class. NYU has mostly 4 credit classes that only meet for 1 hr 15 min twice a week, so your not in class as often as students at most other schools, and about 90% (maybe more) of the students have no class on fridays. Skipping a lot of class is also nice. Gives you more time to enjoy NYC. If only I had a little bit more money, I could really enjoy it, but next semester I should be in an better financial situation so I'll be living it up.

By the way, I may sound like a degenerate, but I have a 3.5 in Stern.

Wow, are you really able to get away with that much skipping and still get a 3.5?

My advice to new college students: take classes you actually want to take (if possible), that way you will rarely think about skipping.
