A Dilemma

So, I just got accepted into a full tuition Scholars program at IIT. Now I have really wanted to go to Rose and will find out about financial aid soon, but I highly doubt they will come even close to what IIT is now offering me. So what do you all suggest?

I mean, is RHIT really that much better than IIT? Or do people only say it's better because it has its "11 year streak of being #1"? I do really like the campus at RHIT much more than IIT and feel more comfortable there, but am I being naive in almost wanting to not take a full tuition scholars program just so I could spend more to go to RHIT?

Thanks for input!

I was in a similar situation, having a full tuition scholarship to another school, and I’m glad I chose Rose. It’s a fairly common thing at Rose, since you have the qualifications to get into Rose, you meet the requirements for scholarships at other schools. I am very happy I came to Rose, although I can’t say what I would think had I gone to another school.

But I mean, is it worth spending how much money more to go there? Because we are in a financial crunch now and I don’t know if I would be able to persuade my parents to let me go to Rose without a really good reason. I mean, don’t get me wrong, as you probably have seen from my previous posts I love the school and would go there in a heartbeat, but financially I don’t know if it is possible. I will get my financial aid package soon though, so I guess I should just wait until then.

Just to say something about IIT though, it isn’t exactly just one of those other schools that beg for top ranking students. It is actually a very good school with a great outlook to the future and a leader in the push towards innovation. This scholarship was given to I think their top 1/2% of students applying.

But I go back to the fact that RHIT is my #1 choice… oh if only my parents were rich…

Congrats on the Camras! Now, assuming RH doesn’t come close to what IIT offers, comes the difficult choice of weighing personal preference vs. finances. Unfortunately, there’s no easy answer for this question. Every family has to consider what it values and how much weight to give to the relative differences between schools.

In our family, RH was eliminated before we even got to the financial aspect, but their relative lack of aid nailed the coffin shut. DS was in the opposite boat from you in that I think IIT was his first choice, but Bradley had the full tuition scholarship. He eventually decided to save his money for grad school and took the scholarship (it’s not like he didn’t like Bradley). Doesn’t mean that’s the right choice, but you’re going to have to choose one or the other and try to move on without regrets. Chances are that no matter which school you choose, you’ll be happy there and feel you made the right decision. Good luck!

Rose-Hulman does give out some extremely good scholarship package if not full ride. I know some people at Rose who were attending Rose for free and they had like 2400 SAT score when they applied.

Also, I recommend you, Salve!, to read this thread (http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/rose-hulman-institute-technology/834019-rigorous.html</a>) in which I made some posts outlining what school Rose-Hulman is like in depth.

Nick123, what made you decide to give up the full-tuition scholarship and go to Rose? Did it seem worth paying more? I just really don’t know what to do and it’s nice to get other’s input. I also would love to be able to go to Rose, but I just don’t know if it is worth giving up the full tuition to go there. But like I said, I still have to see what they are going to give out for financial aid…

Salve, the full scholarship I received was for the University of Cincinnati. While UC is a great school for engineering and other things, it is a large school with a very urban campus, which didn’t appeal to me. I could picture myself fitting in at Rose, but wasn’t sure if I could at UC. As I’ve said elsewhere on here, I really like the small campus community atmosphere, and having professors and classmates that knew me by name. For me it has been worth the extra money, but that may or may not be the case for you. It will of course depend on what you think of both IIT and Rose, and how much aid Rose offers.

I agree with everything you said Nick. I feel the same way about Rose. I definitely felt a lot more comfortable there than IIT and it appealed more to me in general. I’d be willing to make up the difference, but I just don’t think my parents would… I’ll have to see… financial aid letters should be coming out soon (actually next week by what I saw in another thread), all I can do is hope…
