Hi! I'm [spaceneedlesevie] and i'm new here! :) So, any current Andover/Exeter students, if you will:

Do you need laptops? My current school requires laptops for incoming 7th and 8th graders (which I am), and I have the MacBook Pro Retina (Sweet computer, BTW). Would that be sufficient or would I have to use a PC? (I'm just not used to using a PC. There's nothing wrong with them, but it's just not my preference.) Also, how much software would need to be installed? I'm into filmmaking and I saw Final Cut Pro would be provided. I wondered if they installed it on your computer? Also, will you need to use these in class daily, and are there charging outlets. I was wondering if 15 inches was too big...

Binders: So in my school, we use binders, but I find them kind of a hassle... also, lockers. I was the only person who didn't use my locker, lol. So are there lockers there? sorry, this may sound stupid.

Dorms: Okay, I'm confused about the dorms. So there's this confusing thing about the dorms that I read: It says that dorms house anywhere from 8-40 students (!!!) I'm sorry, is that the dorm building or the dorm rooms? How many people are housed in a dorm room?

TV: So, I don't watch any TV, really, but I read somewhere that Andover has HDTV's in each dorm room?? I don't depend on it, obviously, but just curious. :)

Okay.. so I've kind of blanked out. I'll come back with more questions. I WILL!! (mwahahaha)

A laptop is generally good to have. A MacBook Pro is more than enough. 15 inches is fine, Final Cut Pro is not really ‘provided’, it’s more on the server so you can download.
In Filmmaking, you probably use the computers in the lab, which have Final Cut Pro on them. and work on it using a USB or something. Not sure about filmmaking. I’m sure there are outlets.

No lockers, unless you’re a day student. Binders, it depends on the person- I felt the same way in middle school but found myself using binders because of the massive amount of papers.

Yes, dorms can house between 8~60 people. I think one dorm on campus (Exeter) has 70? Thats the building. Each room holds between 1~3 people. Triples are very rare, maybe only 3 on campus. Obviously, rooms with more people are larger, dorms with more people are larger.

No clue about Andover, we have a pretty decent TV in our common room, some dorms have better than others.

THANK YOU SO MUCH. Seriously. you’re awesome, haha. That answered so many of my q’s. If anyone else has anything to add, feel free! :)

@spaceneedlesevie,
Most of the time, you won’t need your laptop everyday. Some people like to bring them to class, but it can be hard to have a face to face discussion with one of your peers when their laptop is hiding their face. But if you are working on papers in class, or research, then they are great to have on hand.

Teachers who give out lots of handouts often want you to have binders. It makes it easier on everyone if each students’ material can be easily accessed. But in most cases it depends on you.

I think most “true” dorms house at least 25 people. These would be the large, red brick dorms. A student enrolled in any grade can live in one of those. There are then houses, which typically house up to 15 students. There might be a few larger, but not many. Those are for new 10-12 graders and PGs, and some students who choose to move into them. It depends on what dorm you are in for how many kids to a room. Several dorms are all singles. Most lowerclassmen end up in doubles. A few have singles. But most upperclassmen get singles, unless they request a double.

Most of the big dorms at Andover have an HDTV with cable in the Common Room. No tv’s in the individual dorm rooms. Some dorms have the older fat tv’s though.

So are you applying for Exeter and Andover? I thought you were maybe attending Exeter in the fall because you posted the same questions in an Exeter thread.
