<p>Overall, how difficult is it to get into HSS for econ. How difficult is it then to transfer out of there to Tepper? Also, I saw on the website that econ. is a joint program between Tepper and HSS. So, which school exactly is going to grant me the econ. degree? I'm thinking about law school over an MBA after college, and I know that econ. is a strong major if apping to law school.</p>
<p>HSS econ is significantly easier than Tepper to get into, but it’s CMU, so neither of them are exactly a cakewalk. Econ mostly collects the kids who didn’t make it into Tepper and are trying to transfer in, but the Econ program on its own is very highly respected regardless. With Econ, you will get a more broad general education, including foreign language/sciences/art/literature. With Econ, though, you can’t specialize in certain tracks that you can in Tepper, like Computational Finance. </p>
<p>If you’re looking for a straight Econ degree, go into Econ in HSS, which will allow you to also minor in things like EHPP (Ethics, History, & Public Policy) or IR or History or English pretty easily. If you want something more finance/MBA related, Tepper’s the way to go.</p>
<p>Ah gotcha. For me, law school is a strong prospect after college over an MBA. I know econ. majors do well in the law school admission process, but I don’t know if I should aim for Tepper or HSS. I also don’t know how reputable HSS is to law schools.</p>

<p>Overall, the salary means aren’t too different. The grad school section is at the bottom too. Econ’s not really legit HSS - it’s more like a hybrid lovechild between HSS and Tepper.</p>
<p>I have an HSS/Tepper question too! I’ll be joining CMU in the fall as an HSS student and that’s fine and dandy and I’m excited, but I’ve recently been thinking I’d like to double major in finance too in Tepper as I want to go onto law school and I figured with degrees in finance and IR/poli sci, I’d be a balling lawyer. Would it be hard to double major? How would I go about doing that? Should I wait until soph. year to do that? Do I have to apply to Tepper or what?</p>
<p>Well looking at that, someone went to Chicagos law school, which is great for me.</p>
<p>Typically you would wait a semester before looking into a double major, yes, but it is possible to take a double major in finance and complete both just fine, since one of the two majors is in HSS, which tends to have a lot fewer restrictions. (HSS structures itself so that if you didn’t declare until sophomore year, you’d still have little problem completing all major coursework.)</p>
<p>Wait, so I could get into carnegie for HSS econ and still have the option of doing a major in tepper?</p>
<p>Yes. I don’t know how common it is or how recommended, but it’s a possibility.</p>
<p>Econ. is sounding really good right now. The only issue is that Carnegie doesn’t seem to have sent many students to t14 law schools recently.</p>
<p>Weirdly enough it seems like most of our law school candidates come from ehpp, English, or history - not Econ. There’s a paper list in the basement of baker hall listibg where all our law candidates went, and many were t1-t2. ( umich, Columbia, harvard, etc). I’m thinking most Econ majors go into finance, not law, and that could be why.</p>
