A few Random Questions.

Just some random questions about admissions.

If someone else is also applying from my school ED, does that help or hurt me, or not affect me at all?

How much harder is getting into Wharton over CAS, I have heard things from it is just as hard as Harvard, to its marginally more difficult than CAS, what is the truth on the subject?

Are likely letters sent out for ED, and who could get one of those, just athletes?

When do ED results come out, is it December 15, or does it vary by year?

Generally applications are evaluated independently. That said it depends on your school too…if your school typically sends a good amount of people to Penn then it really doesnt affect your chances. If your school rarely sends people to Penn it does make it could affect your chances.

So the overall rate last year was 14.2%. Generally, Wharton is significantly harder to get into than CAS. I believe the acceptance rate is somewhere in the 9-11% range while CAS and SEAS are in the high teens and nursing is usually in the low 20s.

Likely letters are only sent out for athletes (yes even in ED).

Usually come out in mid-December (not always the 15th…mine were on the 16th).

For reference…

class of 2007:

Overall Rate: 20.5% (total applicants = 18,827/ admitted = 3,858)
- Nursing: 42.6%
- SEAS: 28.1%
- CAS: 19.4%
- Wharton: 15.5%

class of 2010:

Overall Rate: 17.7% (total applicants = 20,479/ admitted = 3,623)
- Nursing: 28.6% (112/391)
- SEAS: 26.5% (775/2924)
- CAS: 17.4% (2261/12999)
- Wharton: 12.1% (475/3938)

Class of 2014:

Overall Rate: 14.2% (total applicants = 26,938 admitted = 3,830)

Numbers weren’t revealed by school so If we assume the same % of total applications by school as in 2010 (i.e. Wharton Applicants/Total Applicants, etc) and also the same % of total admitted by school as in 2010 (i.e. Wharton Accepted/Total Accepted, etc)

It gives us the following rates for 2014:
- Nursing: 23.0%
- SEAS: 21.3%
- CAS: 14.0%
- Wharton: 9.7%

So assuming applications dont increase too much this year then rates should be roughly similar.

Just to amend one part of whartongrad08’s excellent answer, Penn actually does send non-athletic likely letters, though only in the RD round, as far as I know.

Ok, here is another random question to continue my list of questions. I think last year was the first year Penn accepted anyone from my high school, does that have any effect on admissions, in the sense that will that person’s admission give Penn some kind of “feel” for my high school and the quality of it.

Ok, so I see that the wharton acceptance rate is around 10%, that is about what I thought it was, does Wharton fill half of its class Early Decision?

^ If you look at [Penn Admissions: Incoming Class Profile](http://www.admissions.upenn.edu/profile/) it doesn’t say Wharton specifically, but 31.2% is accepted during ED, slightly less actually enroll.

So in 2010, Wharton admitted 54% of the class during ED.

What about CAS? I’m applying to CAS ED (sending my app today :S) and I’m a legacy applicant, so what are the rates for that?

Hi everyone, I’m just wondering what the secret password that we’re supposed to put in our supplement to get automatically admitted is, just a random question ty.

Edit: I’m applying to Wharton if that makes a difference.

2010:
CAS: 35% of the class was admitted early
Nursing: 26%
SEAS: 19%

Oh as a caveat, for Wharton I included all the joint degree programs rolled into that one. If you exclude the joint degree programs then W admitted 42% of the class early.
