a few transfer questions?

ok so i'm a freshman at texas state university-san marcos right now, i got capped to ut last year (didn't cap b/c it limited you to certain courses), but i want to apply as a transfer. i was wondering if
1. how early should i apply?
2. is it like high school where all the good majors get filled up for late applicants?
3. how hard is it for an average transfer student to get into college of natural science (computer science)

thanks

1.) i applied i think at the end of 2011 for fall 2012… sometime in november, i believe. i didn’t hear back until very early june.
2.) no idea.
3.) i went to two community colleges and my GPAs were 3.5 and 3.8… i had a few extracurricular activities, but nothing outstanding. i think i just listed like astronomy, math, and physics clubs. i have a few withdrawals on my record. i’ve kind of been going to college off and on since 2005. i think what helped was probably that i sent 3 recommendation letters: one from PTK (honor society for community colleges), one from a UT system teacher who also taught at my community college, and one from the president of my college. in my opinion, it’s easier for a transfer student to get in than a freshman out of high school.

I’m in the same position im in community college and also want to transfer to UT I thought that if I got a good gpa(3.5-4) I’d have a good chance at getting in after my freshman year, however I talked to a representative from UT who told me that it wouldn’t be easy to get in since I wouldn’t have 30 hrs completed by the time I applied since they give preference to those with more than 30 hrs, needless to say I was really disappointed because I will only have 22 hrs done by the time I apply, he said that I could still apply so even though it’s a long shot im still applying

yeah usually you have to have 30 hours completed… i had over 100.

@idk2016,

1&2 - I don’t think there are any benefits to applying early, i.e., far in advance of the deadline, because you aren’t going to be reviewed until after the first round of 30+ hour folks and you send in your spring transcript in May (unless you will already have 30 credits when you apply–in that case, early might help if you are seeking a major that can fill up, but I saw freshman getting admitted to CNS-Computer Science in late May 2012 when those decisions are made on spring transcripts). There is a looong 2011-2012 transfer thread that might be worth a look–go to the pages dated mid-May to get an idea.

3 - I think the ave GPA for CS is just above 3.5. Be sure to read the Be A Longhorn-Transfer section on transferable courses for admission to CNS. You will want to be sure you are covered on math and also show some CS coursework and/or CS-related EC/personal learning activities.

@jmasterj23, lots of people transfer in after freshman year. I think “long shot” is overly dramatic, especially for a COLA applicant; it might apply if you were shooting for a specific engineering major, communications or business. Look at that thread I referenced. Put together the best app you can and keep working on your GPA!

FYI, as you will see in that thread, some freshmen who had strong apps were admitted as quickly as 5 days after UT received their spring transcripts.

Good luck to both of you!
