Applying to the University of Texas at Austin!

So I have been more of a reader than a poster thus far. Interesting stories and and good feedback from you guys. Well I am currently at the waiting stage of my application process and its KILLING me. So, I decided to give this posting stuff a try. I am a freshman at the University of Texas at San Antonio(Not Cap) and applying as a transfer student to Austin. Here are my sats and i will have 30 hours by the spring.

College GPA: First semester 4.0, second 3.6-3.8
Lost of community service with a church, many summer hours worked, Played club soccer at school
Letters of recommendation from the pastor of the church, and UT alum(my math teacher at UTSA)
I hope i had strong essays I believe they were pretty well written
Applying for the School of Communication and Liberal arts is my back up, the lowest GPA I believe I will end up with is a 3.7(accumulative) for my semesters combined.

I don't believe they take high school into consideration which is good for me cause high school was not a proud moment for myself.

Also I was wondering if anyone knows when admission letters go out? Or when should I be expecting one? Thanks sorry its so long of a post!

Anyone? Some insight would be very much appreciated..

no, UT does not look at your HS stats at all. Just college work. They dont even look at your SAT/ACT scores. Purely college work

So they'd only look at one semesters worth of grades?

How would they be able to make a decision?

they make a decision based on those grades and ECs
Requirements - Transfer | Be a Longhorn | UT Austin

hope you're from Texas, virtually impossible to get in as an out of state due to their quotas for residents

crs1909: That is the reason why UT requires you to have 30 hours of credit before they will look at your application. It's unclear if the original poster already has 30 credit hours or will at the end of the semester. He will be waiting for some time if the latter is true, but they might just flat out reject him. Even if he had 30 credit hours, they still might reject him. Last semester, there were quite a few posters with good stats/recs who were denied. Sometimes I think that UT makes transfer decisions using voodoo.

Breakfast021589: If you are rejected and you do have 30 hours of transferable credit at the end of the semester, you should be able to appeal the decision. I hear appeals are usually unsuccessful, but in your case it might work--I know someone who successfully appealed on the basis of his grades at the end of the semester. Good luck!

By the way, I don't think that ECs count for that much. I think a really strong essay counts more for UT than ECs.

i'm a current ut student, and judging from people I know who have transferred, you are the closest thing to a lock that I've seen (if your information is correct). I know people who have transferred into Business School (the most difficult to transfer to) with lower GPAs and stats than yours.

Given that UT's criteria is based almost purely on your GPA, you shouldn't worry too much.

Hi, I'm in the same boat as you (applying from UT-Dallas)
Anyway, here are some things I learned:

UT does not look at your HS or SAT/ACT records for admission

GPA is the most important thing, but also keep in mind that they recalculate your GPA without +/- (meaning an A- is still a 4.0)

You must have 30 credits completed before they review your application

Good luck to you!

Yes i will have 30 hours at the end of the semester. they asked that i send my transcript for the last semester and then they will review my entire application but the fact that i will just complete my 30 hours will not affect me...at least thats what they told me....i have herd that people who have GPAs get rejected alot...apparently they do use voodoo to base their decisions...and i am a texas resident

ivy-transfer could you post some stats of those people like what school they transferred from, their GPA etc.?

Breakfast021589,
I am a student at University of Texas at San Antonio as well! I am capped though.. but i do not intend to transfer to austin. For many reasons.. you might think i am crazy. hah.
Anyways, I know for Cap all you need is a 3.2 to successfully transfer. I think the average GPA for students that are not cap to get accepted would be 3.4 . I think you are golden to be quite honest. Just try to be patient.. the waiting process is the absolute WORST part. UT Alum math teacher? ++
all the best.

I am gonna apply to UT too! For Business though... I am currently a freshman at UCR - University of California Riverside.. I am getting a 3.91 this quarter, but only got a 1960 on my SAT..and i have a very low high school GPA

Are you a Texas resident? If not, it's going to be tough, even with a 3.91 GPA for McCombs.

-GPA is the single most important factor in determining transfer admissions, they also look at the rigor of courses taken. This is to prevent students from taking classes like dance and getting a high GPA.
-Essays are the 2nd most
-ECs/Recs are 3rd
