A Few UC Davis Transfer Questions (De Anza/Foothill)

First off, I'd like to say that I at least attempted to search for the answers for these questions. The reason why I'm asking here is because I got multiple/unclear answers.

1.) Do the required courses for the TAG agreement need to be finished before my final spring quarter prior to transfer? Or can I finish up my required courses during that spring quarter?

2.) I was planning on taking the Physics 4 series at De Anza, but they don't offer it during the summer, so would I be able to take PHYS 4A at Foothill, then the rest at De Anza? Or do I need to finish up the rest of the series at Foothill?

3.) For those who are familiar with the FHDA course selection screens: what does it mean when a single course gives you multiple times for that class?
Actual Example:
GENERAL PHYSICS (CALC) MTWR_ | 10:30 am-12:45 pm
________________MW| 07:30 am-08:20 am
_
_____________MW| 08:30 am-10:20 am

I get something that looks like this. I'm aware that the other time is generally the time for labs, but why are there two different time windows? I assumed that it was because I had an option to choose one or the other, but the windows differ in length by an hour.

4.) What are my chances of getting admitted into UC Davis for Mech. Engineering from De Anza/Foothill without completing all the required courses listed on Assist for TAG? I want to transfer within the minimal two years (I'm currently a freshmen) but I might not be able to finish MATH 2B and PHYS 4D before the TAG deadline. My GPA shouldn't be a problem, it's not a 4.0, but I'm certain that I can maintain ~3.5. (I'm aware that all these courses MUST be completed for TAG. What I want to know is my chances of being admitted for Mech. Engineering w/o TAG but with a decent GPA and most of the courses from Assist being completed.)

Thanks

You don’t have to all of your classes done until the end of Spring before transfer. But there are classes that a UC campus might want completed before Fall. You should look up Davis’ TAG agreement from last year if they haven’t put up the new one (they rarely change besides maybe the GPA) to see if it requires some classes to be completed before you apply.

For #3, there are two sections to a class: an A section and a B section. Lecture for section B always meets right after section A’s lecture ends. That’s why you’ll see two different time windows. They do that so that if one time frame doesn’t fit into your schedule, you can enroll in another time frame, and also to split the class up (for example, in my BIS 2C class, there are an estimated 500 people in each section. No lecture building holds 1000 people, so the class is split up into two different sections. All large classes will have an A and a B section).

In regards to the 3rd question, I go to de anza and foothill and I’m pretty sure that they are not 2 different sections for lab. It is one entire lab. I’m not sure why they split it up like that but it may be because your teacher will give you a 10 minute break during lab (that’s what my human anatomy instructor does and I have a similar schedule as your physics class). So, the Monday-Thursday is lecture and the Monday/Wednesday is lab for an entire 3 hours.

1) I second LAforLife. You should research the TAG requirements for the particular UC you are looking to TAG with as the requirements differ from UC to UC. Also, you have requirements for being eligible to apply for a TAG which are separate from the requirements to transfer in with a TAG.

2) I am a biology major at De Anza who’s had to take some of my math and science classes at Foothill due to availability. UCs and CSUs will accept the completion of a series (be it physics, calculus, etc.) at more than one school ONLY IF the schools are sister schools. De Anza and Foothill are sister schools which make up one community college district, so you can split your physics (or any other science, math, etc. sequence) between the two colleges. Similarly, you can split a series between San Jose City College and Evergreen Valley College (sister schools/one community college district) or between West Valley College and Mission College (sister schools/another community college district). However, splitting a series between colleges that aren’t sister schools, like taking first-semester calculus at SJCC or EVC and second-semester calculus at West Valley or Mission, is frowned upon by UCs and CSUs because one community college district’s first class in a sequence may not be exactly equivalent to another community college’s first class in a sequence.

3) At FHDA, classes with labs are listed in the following order: Lecture, Lab Lecture, and Lab. Lab lecture and lab are combined into one lab section, which is then combined with lecture to account for one full section of that particular course; you cannot register for lecture and lab separately, and you cannot register for the lab lecture and the lab separately. Therefore, when you register for a class, you must be able to fit that entire section into your schedule (lecture, lab lecture, and lab). Usually, there is more than one lab section so that students can hopefully find a way to fit the class into their schedules.

4) A UC Davis representative can best answer this question. Lucky for us, because De Anza and Foothill’s quarter ends so late, college representatives are still coming. The UC Davis representative will be at De Anza next week: 11-2 for personal questions on Wednesday, June 13th and 9-3 on Thursday, June 14th. I saw her a couple weeks ago, and she was very helpful in answering questions specific to major requirements. Check out [De Anza College :: Transfer Center :: College & University Representative Visits](http://www.deanza.edu/transfercenter/repvisits.html) for more information, including other college representative visits; representatives from Cal, UCLA, and UCSC are coming next week as well!

I’m actually a Foothill student transferring this fall. I’m actually an International Relations major and admitted to UCD.

Anyways, 1) No, you are allowed to finish up courses during Spring before transfer. Maybe even summer…Just note it in the Application as planned. Pre-reqs should probably be completed first if any.

That’s fine – just print both transcripts when you’re accepted to a college. Since it’s FH / DA it’ll probably just go on the same transcript anyway.

It’s one class at those specified times. I’m sure you can find a better time slot… that time suckkks

Complete all your pre-reqs and have a decent gpa (mine was 3.3) and i’m sure you’ll get in. ESPECIALLY if you TAG. If you TAG, you’re guaranteed admission
