A Freshman's Autumn Schedule

At the moment, I'm registered to take Math 124, Chem 142 and English 111 for autumn quarter. However, the more I look at my schedule, the more I'm considering taking my English Comp. class in the winter and Bio 180 in the fall. What do you guys think; English 111 first or Bio 180? If Bio 180, how's the workload feel taking Math 124, Chem 142 and Bio 180 in one quarter?

Oh, and have any of you had Professor Reid for Chem, Nichifor for Math or Freeman for Bio? What should I expect from them? Thank you for your advice in advance!

You might want to stick with English 111. It’s your 1st quarter after all, and it might be a good idea to feel UW out a little.

I don’t have any idea about the professors though.

I would advise against taking more than one introductory science class per quarter since they are considered to be weeder classes and you would want to do as best as possible in them since they are prerequisite classes for many science/engineering majors. However I haven’t taken any biology classes so I can’t say how much the workload will be. As nbr said, it’s your first quarter so it may be best if you chose English 111 instead of Bio 180 as your third class.

Tips:

-Many large classes grade on a curve, meaning your grade is based on how well you do compared to your peers. In Chem 142 the average grade is set to be at around 2.6 or so.

-Read the textbook and do the problems in them as practice. The professor’s lecture alone isn’t adequate enough like it may have been in high school.

-For some classes you may find that attending lecture gives you no benefit whatsoever. In this case it may be better if you spent that time studying from the book or doing something more productive as opposed to attending useless lectures. However for science classes I recommend against skipping lecture.

It’ll give you a general sense what you could expect from professors, but of course take it with a grain of salt.

Most people that take Bio 180 do so in their sophomore year, and yea, don’t take more than one of those intro. science classes which would probably kill you, haha no, but it probably have adverse effects against your gpa.

I 4.0e’d all 3 of those classes. Still, the majority opinion is that math124 is hard and so is chem142 (our first midterm average was 44%). Then again, I got a 1 on AP chem. Fortunately, the English class should be easy. I heard Freeman is good bio180 prof, but I’d disrecommend taking 3 natural world credits your freshman quarter. Chem142 involves alot of tedious work like prelab, postlab, being in the actual lab, ontop of the faster than high school pace. We approximately covered an entire year of hs school chem in that one quarter. The median grade for chem142 is around 2.6, and math is 2.9 on a bell curve. To get a 4.0, I’m estimating you need around 95% overall percentage in the class. You can look on the math and chem department for past exams to get a measure of how difficult, or not, the material is.

I’m applying early for Biochemistry, so I’ll probably take Chem 162 and Bio 180 at the same time Spring quarter after I do Math 124/Chem 142 and Math 125/Chem 152 respectively. Given that Chem 142 is a “weeder” class, I know the work load will be more than in high school, but at the same time, a very manageable class if I just show up to every lecture and lab, and take advantage of office hours. Is Chem 142 graded on a curve as well? What overall percentage do I need to get a 3.5 or 4.0?
