I'm applying to USC and I was wondering that since 14 i've been doing international modeling so I was wondering if that was a good hook. Also I don't know how ppl calculate weighted and unweighted gpa...it just says 3.8 on my transcript and i'm an international student...so what are the chances?

I wish I looked good enough to be a model........you are a very lucky person.

As for GPA:
Unweighted GPA is calculated like this: A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F = 0. Take the average of your grades.

Weighted is the same as unweighted, except that any passing grades you have in AP classes (and in some cases honors classes) are assigned one more point. For example A = 5 B =4 C = 3

o..k. so my weighted would be 4.1 then....but still would the modeling be a good hook and should i emphasize that in my essay?

Well if you used modeling in your essay, you need to be sure that it was your own personal effort that made modeling possible. Because modeling is something that could very easily be seen as being born with good looks, which would do nothing to help your case.

If you have a story to tell about modeling that shows your determination and drive, go for it. If not......well, i'd stick to something that demonstrates a quality other than looks.

hmm...what would you consider a good hook then? i know for diff unis it's diff, so what would USC look for? and if i were to talk about modeling in the essay it wouldnt be about oh how i'm born with it...more of how ppl misinterpret it for being glamorous when in fact it's the opposite.

It's only effective if you are able to explain how it has helped you develop yourself and grow, or help you understand something about the world. Something like that. You can't just take something you've done that's unusual and then write it off as a plus for admissions. Among some things colleges look for the most in essays are passion and character.

I would consider a good hook to be an extrodinary accomplishment, such as competing in the Olympics, winning a competition at the state level, publishing a paper/book, etc. Those things will help you just by having them listed on the application. Outside of that, you'll have to use your ECs effectively if you want to stand out.

Btw: don't post a thread twice.
