A Good Major for Pre-Med or to Stand Alone

Hiya:

So here’s the situation. I’m thinking of pursuing medicine (wow so original I know), however in the pretty large chance I don’t get into med school, I still want to have a major that will give me a pretty good job prospect.

I’m honestly scared to touch most engineering degrees as I feel I’ll not have much interest in the field or be terrible at it (I’ve found from previous experience when it comes to designing things I’m not exactly the best), however those seem to be the most common ones that fit the “good for pre-med or as a stand-alone” category.

Besides this I have an interest in computer science and art, however my father is oddly against me pursuing the former and I don’t think I’ll be very successful with the latter. There is one job related to art that I’m very interested in, however: medical illustrator. Unfortunately, competition to get into graduate programs for that field are also very tough so it doesn’t work well as a fall-back plan.

I’m hoping to get into McGill University and I feel I have a pretty good chance of getting in, so a major they have is probably best. I’ll take other ideas too though.

Thanks!

Have you looked at the previous threads on this question?

Why should that affect your decision? You’re getting the degree, not your father.

Have you ever looked into food science? McGill has that major. The major requirements do cover alot of the basic sciences that would be needed to apply to medical school. My understanding is that people who major in food science become involved in a variety of areas related to developing, producing, and marketing food products. Perhaps that major would allow you to integrate your interest in science and your interest in art. I believe it is also possible to get a job with just a stand alone food science degree if you elect to forego education beyond a bachelors degree.
