Okay, I'm freaking out. I just got this email from the UCs saying that I'm going to be considered by other campuses besides the ones I applied for. Did everyone get this email? Does this mean I was rejected by the ones I wanted?

It does not mean you got rejected. They’re just giving you more options and hoping to increase enrollment at the less prestigious UCs.

Similar story- I applied and was accepted at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, but before I was accepted, they sent me a letter and information about my application also being submitted to other UMinn campuses and satellite schools. I was a highly qualified applicant (for UMinn).

Me toooooooo! :[ I feel like I did not get accepted to any of the schools I applied to and that they are sending my application to the lower tier UCs:[

Yeah, I received that email today. Not sure what to think of it.

I tried researching via Google but there doesn’t seem to be much information available in regards to it. All I saw was something about a recent change where UCs are to become more holistic in regards to their admissions criteria.

They do it every year. Merced and Riverside get some applications. Riverside got very popular this year, so they might not get so many, and will probably not be part of it next year - just Merced.

I am not sure what it does mean, but I can tell you that not everyone gets the letter, so it may be that you are at the lower end of the applicant pool, and they are just trying to give you options, and also help fill up the less popular campuses.

This does not mean you will definitely be rejected from the campuses you picked.

If you qualify for the UCs, then you are guaranteed a space in one of them, but it may not be one you would chose. This, BTW, will also change soon, as the budget continues to be slashed.

Haha, it doesn’t mean anything. Don’t freak out. They send them out to a lot of people. The part about being considered by other UCs is not related to your chances at the campuses that you did apply to.

The main idea of the letter is to attract students to the UC system as a whole. UC knows that more students want to go out of state this year because of California’s educational budget crisis, so this letter is an act of persuasion to get (and keep) students interested.

^Darn…i received this email. Are you sure it means your at the lower end of the applicant pool? I don’t think I am but you never know for berkeley or ucla…

RadTomato - no I do not know that, but I do know that not everyone does get it. When my son applied (3 years ago) people were talking about getting them, but he did not.

If you only applied to UCLA and Berkeley that might explain it, though. Because that is a tougher pool. But, do not worry!!

Its definitely not only for students at the lower end of the pool. My friends and I got the letter even though I wouldn’t think we are the lower end of the pool.

I also got the letter after applying to Cal, UCSD and UCSB.

^nah, i wouldn’t put all my eggs in two baskets. I also applied davis (ELC), irvine and sd. This has nothing to do with anything but Sd needs to go to a holostic approach.

It’s not just the lower end of the pool! I swear, everyone I know at my school got that letter/email from ‘President Yudof’ so I wouldn’t worry to much about it!

I got the same thing as well after being accepted to UC Riverside a couple days ago. I asked my counselor and she said it didn’t mean much, other than that they are trying to get more CA students interested in “lower tier” UC schools. I don’t think we need to really be worried.

I got this too and I believe (most) everyone got this.
My friend last year got this email and still got in all the top UCs including LA,SD, Berkeley

if you guys need any more proof that this letter is arbitrarily sent out: i got it, and well, my stats are above average for all of the UCs and I was ELC with a guarantee to UC Davis. I applied to berkeley, ucla, ucsd, and davis.

i wish they would take me off their stupid mailing list; i’ve already spent a lot of time trying to tell them that i am going to cornell next year =]
