A LEVEL STUDENTS - Need help with the Current Year Courses Section

Hi guys!

This is just a question about the 'Current Year Courses' category in the Education section.

As an A Level student, we don't have any fixed credit values for the subjects we take. I know that making a certain grade on your A Levels corresponds to a particular number of credits, but there is no fixed value. I've heard a lot of different opinions on this. Most people told me to talk to my college counsellor, but most of the time we have to guide her through the process rather than vice versa.

What have you guys put in that section? If you've gotten some advice, do let me know! Please and thanks.

Hi, I had the same dilemma. Emailed them and here’s the answer I got:

“If you do not receive credit for a course, you can put a zero in there if you think that is the appropriate thing to do for your situation. Your official transcript will show all of your courses, credits, grades. You can also explain this further in the Additional Information section of your application.”

Hope that helped.

Yes, thanks! So do we just list all our A Level subjects and say we got zero credits for them? Or just we write that we took zero credit courses?

Yes, I would say leave the credit value blank. Colleges will obviously have your transcript. Check the “Help” section of the Common App website, but I think it might mention that A level students do not need to enter as many results (e.g. exams already taken) than our American counterparts.

I tried looking in the Help section, but no avail. I’d be really grateful if you could add the link here?

Thanks for your help though. :D

Hi again. Please find below direct information from the “Help” Section of the Common App website:

"Reporting exams for International Applicants (i.e. A-Level)

International applicants do not need to self-report the results of exams administered by state or national examination boards (e.g. Abiture, GSCE/A-Level, etc.). Instead, the school official completing the International Supplement to the School Report form should report this information on your behalf."

It did take me a bit of time to find this again. This is the link I used:
https://appsupport.commonapp.org/link/portal/33011/33013/Article/71/Reporting-exams-for-International-Applicants-i-e-A-Level

Point is, there are two options for A-Level students. We can either select 0 for the Current Year Courses and hence, self-report no courses. Or we can select the number of subjects we have and enter 0 in the credit value boxes for each subject and explain how we study in a different system later in the Additional Info section. In any case, the counselor will be sending our reports for courses so we need not worry about it.

Alright. Thanks guys. Huge help!

Just as a point of interest. Which are you doing/which do you think is a better option? Not reporting any courses or reporting the courses but writing zero credits?

I’m going to report the courses with zero credits and explain it in the Additional Information section just in case the admissions dept. isn’t able to understand the situation. However I honestly do feel that the latter is just an extraneous measure since the Admissions Dept. people aren’t dumb.

Bringing this thread back to the discussion - what should I select for the course schedule? Shouldn’t I select both first semester and second semester given that we complete our A Levels in two full years? And should I report AS and A2 separately in the current year courses section?
