a little help on class rank

how is class rank determined? is it by gpa (weighted or unweighted?) and is it different at each school? if it determined differently at each school then how is that a good way to compare two applicants? also, would my counselor be the one to ask to find out my class rank??
thanks again, i know these are kind of silly questions :)

Class rank is determined by GPA universally. If your HS calculates your weighted average for you then it's most likely determined by that measure, but if your school only gives you an unweighted average I'm not sure since mine weighted it automatically. That fact varies from school to school. It can be a good indicator because if you have a 4.5 weighted GPA and you're ranked #50 out of 200, for example, it shows huge grade inflation, whereas it's the opposite if you have a 4.1 weighted GPA but are #4 out of 500.

And yes, your counselor would be the one to ask for this.
