my beloved (but not so smart) little sister wants to go to JMU. Both of our parents are JMU grads. Her SAT is 1250 (out of 2400) and her GPA is 3.6 without any fancy AP classes. She is ranked 36th in her not so competitive small town, in state HS class. She has played sports and was a cheerleader for a while. Any idea what her chances are? Does being a legend mean anything at JMU? Thanks.

I don't know if being a legacy helps. She really has a decent chance of getting in. Make sure that she writes her personal statement.

the admissions process at JMU is pretty personality based for their size, so i think she will have a good chance. JMU does try to maintain their gender spread (70 to 30) so that helps and her stats do keep her a little ahead of the pack but JMU needs to see her personality so an average to above average personal statement should get her in.

The fact she has not taken any challenging courses however will hurt her. When I visited JMU from my high school, they kept stressing the importance of taking a challenging course load. It may not kill her chances, but it would help if she takes an AP or two.

Has she taken any honor's classes? Are AP classes, and honor classes offered at her high school? What Dal says is true if her hs offers both honors and AP classes and she did not take any of them.

JMU is very GPA driven regardless of how many AP's you have taken. Their SAT scores are down on the ground too. She'll get in, no sweat. Trust me, they need the GPA..............she's definitely in.
