Hey guys, we have a new member. While I cannot answer his question, I will make a thread so those of you who can may help us.

Can you explain how that works or how that is decided that you are in 9th grade now but would be a repeat 9th grader and PA? Did PA suggest that to you? Would you NOT be a repeat 9th grader at another prep school?

When you apply to BS you may apply to the grade that you will be the following fall, had you decided to stay at your old school, or you may decide you need another year to mature, etc, and apply for the year you are currently in. Its usually done with 9th grade, rarely if at all with 10th. Or else, after looking at your application, the school decides that they want you as a student, but would rather have you repeat the 9th grade, and they let you know that when they accept you. If the choice was yours, one would assume you made the same one for all schools. If the choice was the schools, it’s probably done just by one school

Generally the school is pretty clear: you are accepted as a 9th grader, or your are accepted as a 10th grader. If you are comfortable with conditions of their enrollment offer, then you send in your deposit. Compare offers and decide.

The individual school probably has a good handle on how you would fit into their student body and academics. Lots of students repeat going into a boarding school due to higher standards of academics, and to fit in socially.

My son repeated 9th. The school suggested it and I think, in his case, they wanted him all four years for varsity sports and he had been injured at the beginning of his public hs 9th grade year. My older son did not repeat, but said he wished he had known about that option as he felt too young to be at bs at 14 (he had just turned 14 at the end of August). It is definitely beneficial. The academics are much more rigorous than the honors courses at our public hs. My son was able to advance in some classes (math, science, language), so he is ahead. There is no stigma attached to it…many kids repeat, kids do the junior year twice, there are PG’s…so there is already a wide range of ages. I feel that it can be quite beneficial and is a good option.
