i don't know wat to do! (well, kind of leaning on sending a letter of explanation, b/c my average is 84%ish but it's one of the highest in school, however, counselor doesn't rank and thus, it doesn't really show how i have better grades than my peers. should i write to universities saying that even though i only have a 73%, it's still good since class average is 42%?)
do you think that'll make me look bad?
applied to: Upenn, Dartmouth, Cornell, Amherst, St.Louis

Verbal needs to go up

Try to get your guidance counseler to write a letter explaing grades

im sorry but i think the applications u sent are stupid. i think all of them are reaches for anyone. did u apply to some safeties?? i hope so....

I think you made a typo. What did you say your class' average is?

BTW-
I'm sorry, I can't help but mentioning that in your other posts you say that you have a 4.0 unwieghted GPA.

i do have a 4.0 uw GPA, and unfortunately, i didn't apply for safeties :( and my verbal can't go up, b/c no more testing, last testing was like for jan. plz keep the comments rolling in, even if they say i am stupid and shouldn't have applied! i also would prefer it better if you guys give me some good advice :) thanx

well, you already sent the apps...

"b/c my average is 84%ish but it's one of the highest in school, however, counselor doesn't rank and thus, it doesn't really show how i have better grades than my peers. should i write to universities saying that even though i only have a 73%, it's still good since class average is 42%?)"

????????????

You didn't apply to a safety? why the hell not?

It's obviosly BS. No school's average is 42% and you can't have an average grade of 84 and 73.

this ain't bs, i am talking about in 1 class, the class average is 42% and i have 73%

ouch, that poor class.

yes i know, my teacher is crazy, b/c apparently, his son is in 3rd year uni. and he didn't do well on MCAT. and now, the teacher is trying to fail every1, so to make himself feel better. however, he could not get fired, b/c there is union protecting him. and if i bring this issue up at school council meeting, he'll pwn me on the next test, even as now, he hates me, b/c i ask questions he can't answer. and he tries to give me the lowest grade possible.

It is often recommended that an applicant send a letter a few weeks after the deadline to express continued interest and-- if true-- that you would attend if offered admisions. That may be a good time to explain the grading system. I think its important in your situation. It is unfortunate that you didn't apply to Safetys. I think there are a couple of school like Univ. of Pittsburg (has an Honors Program) that takes later admissions.

If you really don't have safeties, you may have to condsider a gap year. Frankly, even if they don't have a problem with your GPA, you SAT scores, I & II, are low for all your schools. Can you afford a PG year at a prep school. It would be a good opportunity to up your scores and gain some more strength in grades. Or maybe volunteer overseas and study to retake tests. Good luck, but think through some alternate plans.

Why'd you aim so high? Have you not seen that people with higher stats than you often get deferred and rejected from top schools?

do you guys think i should write a letter to say if we were to rank at my school, i would be ranked top 2%? (at least top 6/300+), b/c our grades are really low for every1, only 2 ppl have avg over 90%, and the rest are pretty much in the 70s or lower. do you think that's 2 late?

The verbal score and the GPA will probably hurt you (unless any of the schools you listed consider you as a math major, since you have great scores in your SAT I and SAT II math).

You need some safeties because you've applied to some very competitive schools. If your class rank was high, then I'd tell you otherwise, but schools like that will look at your grades. It's not too late to apply to some state schools (don't worry, most of them don't require essays other than personal statements for applications).

oi, newby, go lookit the "where can I apply with deadlines later than now" thread in the college search board. you might find some safetyesque schools that are more realistic for you that are still really good. if you throw together an application real quick you won't have to take a gap year, if all goes well.

4.0 UW and 4.1 W?

How many honors/ap classes did you take? 1 or 2? Along with poor scoring on your SAT's, i have a bad feeling for you...However, you may still get into your colleges...start praying...

personally, i would apply to some safeties....you might find yourself in a community college if you dont...

phoenixfenix is right.

4.0 UW is great.. but 4.1 W?
i think my unweighed is like 3.6 someting but weighed is 4.36 and i've aken a total of 15 APs/Honors courses at my school.

Bad idea to not apply to safeties. I give you credit on great math scores, but verbal will be your crux. i can't imagine what you must be going through with your teacher. Just hang in there and apply for safeties.

A bit off topic, but how does a 670 Writing, 640 Verbal, A- in AP English Literature 1st semester senior year, and a 4 on the AP Language exam look? what i mean, what do those scores and grade tell adcoms about me?
