I hadn't thought of a party/surprise party for my son before going away to BS -- but it sounds like something he would appreciate. Is a surprise party something that a boy would like? (I don't want to ask him since that would obviously spoil the surprise).

i would think anyone would like a surprise...
my friends straight out told me that if i didnt hae a party,
they were throwing me one.
but id rather plan it myself

dazzlezz,

what a great idea! i was thinking of having a party, but i was unsure of what exactly.

Slightly OT, but since you're looking for ideas for parties, here's one we wanted to do once but never did. Some states have hunting lotteries, in which only a limited number of people win the right to hunt a particular animal. In our case it's moose. So we were going to have a "Save the Moose" party in which everyone who attended agreed to enter the moose lottery and swear not to hunt or use the permit if they won. We would have the forms and make them fill them out and pay the $20 entry fee, then send them in. If anyone won, it would be one more moose surviving hunting season that fall.

I have no idea how that furthers your question about BS going away parties, but I just like moose and wanted to share.

To hsmomstef and others who are thinking about a surprise party. I gave my son a surprise birthday party on the first weekend after March 10th. (Just so happens his birthday was around that time.) I invited the whole grade and somehow they managed to keep it a secret and my son was truly surprised. He said it was the best party ever.

I will really miss his classmates. They are the best kids one could hope to have as a child's classmates. When I invited them using electronic invitation, every single one RSVP'd adding "thank you for inviting me" and most offered to help. Some kids arrived two hours early to set up and decorate. They made posters with birthday wishes and congratulations for getting admitted into bs. We first served lunch on a rooftop and later moved to a lower floor for cake and movie.

One of the best presents was a scrapbook organized by several classmates. They collected old photos and cut outs from yearbooks. They had portraits of him going all the way back to pre-school! The scrapbook was full of nice messages. Oh no... I'm getting teary-eyed just thinking about it. I felt that S is really loved by his friends and that they are so supportive of him going abroad to a bs.

Since peer pressure to stay was in another thread, I'll mention this. I think what worked for us was that S told his friends early on about his plans to apply. It helped that his school does not have a high school and it's a transient population to begin with (being an int'l school in a major city). I just hope S finds friends at bs who are as nice as the ones he is leaving behind!

p.s. laxtaxi, I love the moose party idea!

I was given an awesome surprise Birthday/Going Away Party yesterday. I was so surprised! They had rented a slot in a popular restaurant, it had a buffet, awesome deecorations, and so many people! I wonder how I was left in the blue this year about something so big, especially when it was about me. lol. Today I found out my parents and like a dozen other parents had been in on it. I should have guessed. lol. It was also very nice that they knew I had a formal dresscode next year and got a truckload of presents with formal apparel. lol.
Im being dedicated a page in our yearbook as well. I was blown away and my voice started to break when I started saying something. Then everyone "awwwwwed". It was pretty funny.
lol I was very sad knowing I was leaving so many great people behind. But then I felt good that they would not forget me and cared so much about me. I have a tear in my eye and a knot in my throat as I write this. lol Darn it.

Instead of a going away party, we are having a welcome back party at Thanksgiving.

That's a cool idea too, nervedoctor.

It's kind of kooky that you're already planning a welcome back party when no one has left yet . :)

I want to have one! Definitely!

I love the posterboard idea, too. My friends might make a video with pictures and songs on it. I'll definitely cry, but it will be so sweet!
