A possible National Championship for BC football

To be honest, at the start of this school year I didn’t think we have a shot at NC. I would have been happy with the Orange Bowl. But thank to the mass destruction of the top-10 this Saturday, BC has moved from#12 in AP to #7. We are only five ranks away from being a legitimate contender. Of course, rising in ranks is easier said than done. We NEED to be undefeated in the remaining seven games and MUST win the ACC championship. And we also need the other six teams above us to lose.

1 LSU

Chances of losing:

9 Florida and @ #8 Kentucky.

We have to blow off Bowling Green and ND by at least a 30pts. margin to rise in rank and not lose out to either Florida and Kentucky.

2 USC

Chances of losing:

14 Oregon, #3 California, and #18 Arizona State.

The USC and California is win-win for us.

3 Cal

Chances of losing:

18 Arizona State and #2 USC.

Best case scenario: Arizona State defeats Cal, Cal defeats USC, and USC defeats Arizona State. This paper-scissor-rock scenario decreases all their ranking and raises ours.

4 Ohio State

Chances of losing:
A LOT. Although they are playing only one highly ranked team (Wisconsin) on their current schedule, they are also facing several upset potentials:

23 Purdue, Michigan St, Penn State, Michigan, and Illinois. All those teams have something to prove, I’m praying all their angers are aimed at Ohiot State.

5 Wisconsin

Chances of losing:
A LOT too. They are facing #4 Ohio State. But the way they have been playing lately, they barely edged out a victory at Michigan St. and Iowa. They still have to face Penn State, Michigan, and Illinois.

6 USF (how the heck did they edge out over us?!)

Chances of losing:
Too FEW! They upcoming schedule does not give me hope. Their only two ranked opponents are #20 Cincy and #21 Rutgers. Any loss will do for me. Any.

I know this is a college admission forum, but you cannot help but be excited if you’re an BC Eagle contemplating a possible National Championship bowl. Since that game is playing during winter break, if we make it in, I’m RVing there. A lot can go wrong, but you can’t blame a junior for dreaming a possible NC while he’s still in school to enjoy it.

take this into consideration.

7 Boston College

Chances of losing:
Many. #15 Virginia Tech, Florida State, #22 Clemson, Miami.
Keep in mind that BC didn't do too well against a DI-AA team in uMass this past weekend.

All four of those games are winnable, but are also losable. I personally think that BC is ranked too high, since there are easily better teams than BC ranked lower, such as Florida, Oklahoma, and possibly West Virginia. There's no doubt in my mind that BC won't make the championship bowl because it'll be LSU v USC, but I certainly hope that BC gets an Orange Bowl Appearance.

BC's performance against Umass this weekend was quite depressing. I got the feeling that the players were a bit too confidence for their own good. And as I said above, BC's rise in rank is due to the destruction of half of the top-ten. Our hold on #7 is tentative. That's why we have to Destroy Bowling Green and ND to hold on to it.

What I am hoping for the rest of the season is upsets in the top-five. Unlike the pre-season, BC now has a shot; it doesn't mean BC will or must be in the NC, but we can be in it if we CONSISTENTLY perform and pray for losses for the USC, LSU, Cal and Ohio State.

Yeah, I think the biggest tests looming are Clemson and VT. Fl State and Miami, not so much. And ND should be easier than UMass. I'm loving the high ranking, but anyone who saw this weekends UMass game, knows we didn't look like a Top 10 team - but then, look at the competition - great teams really bring it when faced with another great team - but they also win the expected winnable games, like BC has done so far.

But winning 3 out of those top four games against ranked teams and BC has a chance to be in a really big BCS Bowl. But as Reddune points out, losses by the other key teams are important too

I still don't really understand how the whole BCS thing works. Does anyone? I know I'll be going if there is nice, warm Bowl game in January.

Go Eagles!

The championship bowl is a game between the top 2 ranked teams in then nation. The rankings are chosen by sports writers and will change according to whom they feel should play in the national championship game. The other BCS bowl games are battles between different divisions in the NCAA. The teams with the best division winning percentage will move on to play in the specified bowl game

The BCS also takes into account computer polls, which are based on team stats and are less subjective than the Coaches and Harris Interactive poll.

Sorry to troll...LOL. Go BEARS!!!

The AP poll doesn't matter for determining the BCS. You need to move up in the Coaches and Harris Interactive poll.

However, if Boston College wins the ACC, they get an automatic bid to a BCS game. But, they have to be ranked #1 or #2 in the BCS poll to be in the National Championship game.

I believe the BCS poll will start to be released next week.

2 USC

One down, three to go.

But the way LSU is playing, you can not help but have chill runs down your spine. 4th down, down by three, a minute to go, and they go for it instead of kicking...GUTSY!

If Stanford could do it, why not Kent St and Oregon St?

All of these, and our dream of going to NC, are extremely unlikely, but with the bizzaro-world defeats over the past two weeks, who know?

It was crazy seeing USC fall to lowly Stanford. BC is in a great position to remain in the Top 5, and now I dare think we may be able to compete in the NC. A game with Cal would be great, but I think LSU looks about the best. Not sure about Ohio State.

Now to take care of the Irish in the "Holy War" in South Bend. BC has got to be ready and not take the game lightly since the Irish, albeit a weak team, will be all pumped up about their UCLA win.

Go Eagles!

Sorry guys, gotta tell ya, God loves Notre Dame more than BC. We have parietals and that makes us better than you. ;)

We do call ourselves the "Soldiers of Christ," and it is universally agreed that God supports the troop.

You also you have an 1-5 record, beating a third-string, walk-on quarterback. I guess that does make you guys better at losing.

But Reddune you forgot they have parietals and that must be an asset to the football team.

Even with all the repressed sexual energy, I doubt it will help them on Saturday.

Well, we lost, but you guys should have beaten us by a lot more than you did given the fact that you are, after all, the fourth best team in the country. Two touchdowns (not including the one that was stolen from us) is not the difference between an undefeated team and a team that just won its first game last week against a 3rd string walkon.

We should have and probably would have if not for the horrible penalties.
A 125 yards worth of penalty. ND only has one offensive touchdown so don't get too excited heading to USC next week. Good luck with the Trojans. We'll be #3 by tomorrow considering LSU just lost.

1 LSU

2 down and 2 to go. Looking at you Cal (Oregon St. is looking right at you) and Ohio St.

Watch out guys...it's treacherous at the top.

Not trying to insult Cal here, but did someone kidnap your special team? Why didn't you kick?

^ Lost on two freshman mistakes. RS Freshman QB trying to be TD hero and freshman RB fumbling kickoff return to give the Beavs a free field goal.

Good luck to BC against VTech.

The Sporting News' Matt Hayes had a scathing article about if BC and USF play in the national championship game, it'll "set college football back 100 years"....ouch.

I read that too - BC is getting no to little respect for their perfect season. It seems as though the sports writers all want the same old teams to be playing for the Championship i.e. LSU, Ohio State, USC, Oklahoma.etc. It's time for some new blood at the top!

The Bears' freshman QB did play quite well until the mental lapse at the end - but the coach is really the one to blame for the clock management.

Obviously it is treacherous at the top this year. I like how Jag seems to have the team focused on the real goal - winning the ACC - not the national rankings.
