I?m seriously considering dropping a class, but I?m very worried how a w would look on the transcript. The reason I want to drop is because of the teacher who is terrible. I?ve read on some of the threads that one w isn?t a big issue if the class is unrelated to your major, but this class is a requirement for my major. I've done well in my other classes so far.
Would a w have any affect on my chances of getting in a top law school (such as U of Chicago)?
Do I need to include an addendum to explain it (when it was the teacher that was the problem)?
Also, has anyone here gotten into a top law school with a W(s) on their transcript?

Yes, I know someone who got into a top law school with a W. Don't worry that much. It's not going to end your law career.

I don't imagine it's that big of a deal. I also assume that a "w" would look better than a "C." You be the judge.

Bear in mind that it might be more of a hassle than it's worth (if you're on semester system, anyway) to withdraw at this point, since you're going to have to take the class later anyway.

I would refrain from an addendum that blames the teacher unless you're able to do it veeeery gracefully (which is certainly possible). As legitimate a reason as it is, it could too easily come off sounding whiny, picky, and like you're trying to pass off blame or make excuses. That said, I doubt you'd need any sort of addendum for one "w" unless there really was an exceptional reason.

Good luck dealing with the class!

I took a W instead of a C last quarter, and will be going to law school in the fall. It doesn't hurt that much unless you have several. And don't bother with an addendum, all thhat will do is make them notice the W.

I know someone who took a W just beause they slept through the midterm exam of a class (I guess they set their alarm incorrectly).

Seemed a lot better to get a W than a F--and I know they are applying for law school next year.

Are all W's viewed the same or do schools provide extra info?

At my school there is a date provided for the W. So, a W at the end of the semester is worse than one a few weeks after classes start. I have two W's (both early in the semester) and I never thought anything of them. I hope this does not hurt me.
