OMG i am so nervous. i haven't heard yet but i got an email that the ED decisions would be up on pioneerweb asap!

adeolangelou-

What do you want to know about the midwest?

Could anyone of you who got in ED post your stats? I'm applying RD.
Thanks and congrats!

mew, lol, I don't go to school anyway... I basically homeschool myself because my school sucks and offers no advanced or AP classes. Sooo, I take my classes online! :)

Adeo, what do ya need to know, I'm as midwestern as it gets! My house is surrounded by cornfields on each side! (very typical here!)

Neal-
Do you also live in a county that only has one stop light?

scarecrow-

I got in ED and here are mine:

ACT-35
GPA-3.92 UW
Class rank: 1/400ish with my weighted GPA

casual,

I have to smile...you are not going to make any "mere mortals" feel any better about their chances of getting in ED, with stats like that! Wow! I have to think you would be a shoo-in ED, RD or anyD. What did you get for merit aid? Congratulations on your admission and on the hard work it must have taken to get those stats.

Dairy,
Thanks for the congratulations. I got $10,000 a year in merit aid (15k is the max). I also got $30,200 in grants just from them. So, with government financial aid, I should be covered on just about everything. And if not, they "gave" me $2k in work study and $2k in Perkins loans.

mm99, actually, we have a couple more than that... and I think I can just about count them all... hmm, my estimation is about 12 or so (10 being from one town) (oh, and I am counting stop light as an intersection with stop lights, not the individual lights)

You from Iowa too?

applied early decision with lots of ec;sat: 800comp, 700writing, 750 math; 3.3 gpa not weighted; National merit semi finalist;ok essay; not sure about recs but should be ok? Loved grinnell but got deferred to rd. I assume chances are slim now that I will be accepted. Any suggestions on other schools? Hope others got better news.

biofreek!
okay u're deferment is very discouraging, any idea wut might've dragged you down?
Btw, I think the 78% acceptance rate for Grinnell ED is VERY misleading bc it's still so competitive since Grinnell attracts basically ONLY motivated and competitive students..........GOD I WANT TO GO TO GRINNELL!!! :(

oh and to casual..... I wish i was you haha

no clue why I didn't get in. Gpa maybe 3.3? Small high school maybe? Did you apply ed?

Okay, I met with an admissions person:

This is how they assess your app:

50% - Rigor of high school classes (as compared to what your HS offers), GPA, class rank
25% - Test scores (ACT, SAT I & II)
25% - "Promise of Return" this basically means how you will contribute to the Grinnell College community, this is based upon your high school EC and your intention to be involved through college. (Recommendations and essays are factored in here)

Basically, what I suggest is to show passion for extra curricular activities and show that you want to continue to participate through college. If you have good scores/grades and took hard classes in high school, you shouldn't sweat admissions! Good luck!

hmm. Thought I had all of that. 5 ap classes 4s and 5s. Theater, several service orgs, founded a couple of clubs etc. I guess I will give them a call and see where I was weak. I'm really just not sure.

oh god now i've never been so tempted to do a chances thread! i will resist tho....for as long as i can haha
and yes, i applied ed 2
also biofreek, it's possible that maybe they just deferred you to follow thru with/get to see your 1st semester grades. maybe. yeah giving them a call wouldn't be a bad idea tho.

I will cross fingers and toes for you! Good luck!

Yikes, that is a quite random deferral. I wonder if many seniors who otherwise wouldn't have considered Grinnell are turned on by its large endowment? To be honest, that's how a school in Iowa ever found itself on my list. I do really love the school though, and not just for it's money (it's an added bonus).

Haha yeah I held off doing a chance thread up until doing it last month, and again for Grinnell in this forum. It's just... not possible to not do it, as much as I didn't want too lol.

They also got a much higher yield last year than they expected so they will be doing a LOT of deferring this year, because they don't want another over-yield. Are you from the Midwest, biofreek?

yes, I am from the Midwest. Thanks for the comment about high yield. If that is the case, what are my chances of getting in regular decision? Do they improve or should I just chalk it up to a disappointment and move on?

EFF.... i forgot about that high yeild thing. how much do u think it'll effect us?! i was just thinking, probably alot, i think they over-yielded by about 40 which is RIDONC. especially for such a small class.

okay i just did a calculation (i can't even tell you how many numbers were involved haha) and for this year the overall acceptance rate is gonna be more like 44.67%. that's accounting for the high yield from last year, proportionate applicant increase with population (then a little bit more bc grinnell's particularly becoming more popular in past years and i'm sure this year will be no exception). that's a significant decrease, and i can almost gurantee that much, tho honestly it might even be a lower admit rate.

I'm tempted to curse right now but i'll resist.

i'm too lazy to calculate ed admit rate, but it'd have a MUCH greater decrease bc everybody admitted goes. i'd just guestimate 50%.

plus not that many unqualified applicants i apply i don't think bc it's on all those rankings for working the hardest and STUDYing the most....

FML is my point
