A question about admissions

I've heard people say that if you want an idea of how likely you'll get into a school, then look at how many people have gotten in from your highschool in the past.

Well, no one from my highschool has ever gotten in to Penn. No one from my high school has ever gotten into any Ivy, or similar schools. The best we've had is two people a year getting into the state flagship, UVA. UVA is a good school, don't get me wrong, but two people a year.. I feel as though UVA merely accepts them so that they can say they have some students from rural areas.

So, if no one has ever been accepted from my school to anywhere near as good as Penn, does this almost certainly mean I won't get accepted either? And to clarify, I'm not an absolute stand-out genius either. I'd say I might be about on par with the majority of Penn applicants, if you take my circumstances into consideration. No research projects or perfect SATs, but I've had three jobs already at 17, and have just gotten the fourth, and a 2130 SAT which is about a 1000 points better than my highschool average..

Anyone know anyone who was the only kid ever accepted from their highschool?

Bumpingg…

I’m just really wondering if anyone has been the first from their school to be accepted…? Or if it can happen?

Sorry for ramblinggg

The SAT is ok, nothing special though.

Which Penn Program are you applying to? Can you give us some more stats, since this is basically a chance thread?

It can happen. They won’t reject an applicant simply because that school doesn’t have a history of sending students to an ivy. If you are qualified and impress the adcoms, then you could get accepted.

I’m applying to CAS ED.
And this isn’t a chance thread  I already know my stats aren’t outstanding, and people are going to tell me I have a shot, but not a good one.

I just want to know if any of you actually KNOW someone who was the first from their school, or ARE someone who was the first from your school. I don’t want to know it can happen, I want actual proof that it has happened, and recently.

Why? What will that do for you?
Absolutely. Nothing.

People in this scenario get in because they are unique and therefore each situation is unique.

We’re talking more unique then just regular college admissions, which are unique themselves.

If you really stand out and have high test scores, a rigorous courseload, ecs, etc, you have a good shot

Our school is huge and we rarely send kids anywhere good. Friend got into Yale last year. So it happens.
