A question about Congressman..and stuff

So my dad knows this guy who knows this guy who used to work with my Congressman for the 8th District of Michigan, Mike Rogers (where I live). This guy that my dad's friend knows wrote me a wonderful letter of recommendation. He sent it to all of my sources of a nomination, but he sent the letter to their Washington, D.C. offices. For the applications for each individual nomination source, they say to send all application stuff to their Michigan offices. I'm worried that the letter of recommendation will be lost in all of their D.C. mail...what do I do!?

Thanks

Tell the guy to send it to the Michigan offices...

So my dad's friend's brother's uncle's niece's daughter's friend's teacher's pastor's son's friend's father used to know a guy who knew a guy who knew Bush. Where should I have this sent?

And should I post this on an internet forum or perhaps call their office?

You drunk or something?

No, it just annoys me when people come on here talking about their connections, asking silly questions that they ought to be able to answer by themselves.

It's almost like they want to brag...

Look, it's great to have connections. The real answer to this question is to call the offices and find out, not post on an internet forum so we can "see" how awesome you are.

Remember what I told you about patience? :)

LEARN, grasshopper! ;)

Dash, simply ask him to send another copy to the Michigan offices, with a quick additional note explaining why it's been sent twice. Simple. Nothing to sweat over. :)

i have a feeling that the letter of recommendation from this guy that doesn't even know you will be really ****ty and not help you at all... why are you even sending it to any nomination source BESIDES the one hes connected to, house of reps?

It's not who writes your recommendation, but what they say... at least thats what UVa said. I don't know how it works in your district, but in mine the congressperson doesnt even have any real influence on the nominees besides just signing the paper that her staff hands her, so in my case I don't think connections to the Representative would help at all... the USMA grads would just read some letter from some guy that doesnt know me, where the guy talks about how connected he is and is expecting to be influential to something he isnt even a part of, and they will just think the same thing that all these other people on this board will think.

Ok, I honestly wasn't trying to brag about my connections, I thought it was funny that my dad knew someone who knew someone, etc...but apparently it wasn't. I probably have the worst connections in the world! Thanks for the advice though. The thing is, I would just call him and ask him to send it to the MI offices, but I dont know him personally, and apparently he really bent over backwards to send that letter out, so I'm a little hesitant to ask for more favors. Sorry if I sounded like I was bragging..man people seem to be snappy lately

Dash,

Connections don't really help much anyway. I recall at least one of ours made a specific request that candidates do not ask for letters from anyone not on the provided list. Don't worry about it though. The Washington offices will likely forward mail to your local offices anyway. In the meantime, if you have the nomination request packages and your MOCs are asking for teacher reference letters, make sure you select the teachers who know you and your abilities well. Those will be much more meaningful letters than from a connection who doesn't really know you at all. Best of luck!

It's all politics, connections ALWAYS matter.

Relax, Dash. It wasn't you.

My good friend TN just tends to jump too soon from time to time. It's all cool. We're all learning.

Again, if you're really concerned, just have this person send another copy. Momoftwins is probably right, too, but I know in matters such as this, one wants to be sure.

As for whether recommendations (and by whom) work, who knows? As with anything subjective, the variables are too numerous to control. Sure, a MOC may request letters only from people on a given list, but if (and I'll exagerate on purpose) he gets a letter from the President, who just happens to be in his party, well, I doubt it will be ignored.

I've always said that if you have someone who can write a legitimate and GOOD (as in "well-written") recommendation for you, you should send it unless the instructions from the target specifically dictate otherwise (because then it might just tick them off, which you don't want). If the person writes the letter happens to be Someone, whether it hurts or helps will depend on who is writing and who is reading. I doubt I would ever give a recommendation written by Jack Murtha ANY credibility, for example. I'd file it in the toilet where it belongs.

Choose wisely, and good luck. Just remember that ANY recommendation, written by ANYONE to ANYONE, MUST be backed up by YOUR qualifications or else it's worthless. They're nice to have, but they're NOT silver bullets.

i have a family friend who happened to be an old friend of the supe...i wrote him an email describing my problems with getting a waiver for flat feet, he forwarded it to the supe...the problem was quickly solved. the lesson: use connections as much as you can. i'd simply add the letter to your folder wherever you can: it can't hurt!

and TN, take a chill. please man.

To whom is an anonymous person bragging?

Who knows? :D

I think it is somewhat similar to the noise a tree makes when falling in an empty forest.

Jumping on the back of an anonymous posting for bragging serves as much purpose as the braggart had in the first place. Shouldn't TN be out running or something? Leave the worthless postings to us bitter, old men.

Go easy on him. He's learning.

He's a good guy who's just a bit high-strung. They'll start knocking the rougher edges off him in about 12 days.

I've already taken a few off of him myself. ;)

Or they may add some. ;)

Well, yeah. That, too. :D

Whew! You folks are bruttal! ;)
