A question about recommendations.

Ok, I know that Columbia does not accept the Common app, but has their own app. So, lets say my teacher and councilor writes recs for Columbia. So is it possible to somehow direct these recs to the Common app so that I can send it to other universities? Or do I have to ask them to write the same recs again for the common app? I'm talking about online application for both cases by the way.

They have the Microsoft Word version right? If it’s submitted online, then they have to go to the Common App and stick it on. Once for all the schools you are applying to throught the Common App.

What do you mean?

The recommendations that were sent to columbia-were they the only copies? Do your teachers still have a copy of the recommendations in their computer?

Ok maybe I should have said this earlier. I have not applied to any universities, I’m too young. I’m simply clearing whatever doubts I have. Say they do not have a copy of the recommendations, what do I do then?

Well, that’ll be a problem unless you want to write different recommendations for different schools. They’ll have to write another letter. Because I find it highly unlikely for the college to return you your application; the application forms WARN you to keep photocopies of the documents you submit.
But I think that kind of thing hardly ever happens…I mean, your teachers will ask you how many schools you are applying to when you ask for the recommendations so they’ll know whether to save their documents, ‘cause most teachers use the same letter for all the schools of a single students’(like you use the same application essay for all the schools). Of course, you should remind your teachers to keep backup of your documents too.
I hope I made sense:)

You just ask them to save their documents rather than deleting them after they’ve submitted to Columbia, and make it very clear that they will also have to upload them to Common App.

Ok thanks guys. I understand.
