Ok, so I'm planning on majoring in cognitive science. I talked to an admissions counselor a while back about teacher recs. Rice only requires one, but I want to send in two. She said to send in recs from teachers whose subjects have something to do with my major. Here's the thing. I'm taking the things pertaining to cog sci (i.e. AP Psychology) next semester, long after the application is due for ED. She said to only turn in one rec, but I want to turn in two. Here's why - my AP Language teacher and my AP USH teacher know me very well, and can offer different perspectives about me. Would it be ok, then, to send in two recs even though she told me one is fine? I mean, it's not like she said I CAN'T turn in two recs. If I do (which I will because again, both teachers have different perspectives of me that I want to be seen) will it hurt my chances of admissions?

It’s fine to send in two recs. That is by no means excessive. I sent two.

You aren’t expected to have recommendations relating specifically to your major. You are, however, encouraged to send a recommendation from a teacher in a subject similar in nature to your major (e.g. not necessarily AP Psych, but potentially something else relating to science/social science). If you feel the strongest recs will come from teachers in unrelated subjects, go ahead and send those.

If both recs add something to your application, it’ll help you to send both.

Thanks RedSeven :). One more thing, though: will she look at me negatively if she’s the one reviewing my application and sees the two teacher recs when she was the one who suggested only having one?

I doubt she would even remember.

^^ Agreed.

Due to some miscommunication, I ended up having 5 recommendation letters sent to Rice. Still got in.
