Hello,
I'm an aspiring economics major from OOS hoping to apply to the College of William and Mary (my dream school) in the fall.

In an effort to fully prepare myself for economics and for college in general, I was hoping to complete a lot of my mathematics coursework before I graduate high school.

I am planning to take Calculus I, II, and III at a community college and was wondering if W&M would allow me to to use these credits to move into a higher level of mathematics (provided that I perform well) or to fulfil credit requirements for my major.

In case you're wondering:
- I would take Calculus I this summer and II-III as one-semester courses during my senior year.
- I am planning to take Calculus outside of school because my school no longer allows students to take AP Calculus if they have taken CP Precalculus, regardless of the grade they have in the class. My other option is to take a CP Calculus class, but our CP mathematics program is not nearly as comprehensive as the AP program.

Thanks for your help!

There is a difference between placing out of a class and getting credit for it. If you get a high enough score on an AP test, W&M will give you credit for the class. If you take the class at a college, W&M might give you credit. But if you don’t get a high enough AP score to get credit, you still might skip taking that class again and move on to the next level.

Generally, standard courses like calc are transferrable to W&M provided you get a C or higher. We cannot guarantee transfer credit until your college transcript is evaluated (which happens after being admitted) but it’s likely that you could receive credit for the courses you plan to take.

Thanks for letting me know!

Does W&M allow transfer credits for an online college calculus class?

Thank you.

Very much depends. As a general rule, we don’t accept online credits because we don’t offer any online classes. There have been exceptions and this might be a question best directed to the University Registrar’s Office which is where our transfer credit coordinator works.
