A Question of Etiquette in Writing a Letter to a College...

...that would be incredibly last-minute. I have recently been admitted to a few colleges, an achievement that I am both humbled by and also proud of. I have not yet heard, however, from my first-choice college (which I will call "Acme" College)

I planned on sending a letter to Acme notifying them of an award I recently received. However, would you recommend against inserting a paragraph into this letter saying something along the lines of, << even though I have been accepted by College 1, I would like to attend Acme >>

Thoughts?

Don’t write them. They have until April 1 to notify you of admissions. You would just be a pest.

After you get your Financial Aid package from them, then you can say: ABC school is my top choice, but it would be difficult for me to pay the additional cost vs. XYZ. This is what they offered, is there anything else I might qualify for? I would really like to go to ABC.

Why on heaven’s Earth would you want to say you’ve been admitted to C1??!!

@OperaDad - The primary purpose of the letter isn’t to be an “annoying pest” in the sense of saying how much I love them, unless you count telling a college I received an award since the submission of my application falls into that category.

@fiona - I posted this thread because I was unsure (and I suspect other applicants may/will be as well) about whether mentioning that information would help in any way. I’ve only heard it count towards fin aid considerations (as OperaDad noted) but no one has really talked about towards gen admissions

To clarify: I’m writing a letter saying I recently received an award. Would you recommend against adding a paragraph described in my original post?

I believe Operadad means that it is too late to have an award make/or change the status of your application. Decisions certainly have been made already.

dont send it, decisions have most certainly already been made. i guess if you really wanted to, i’d call first and ask them if it’s okay. however, unless it’s a significant (eg state/national) award, it’s not worth it.

And if you do send it, don’t mention your other admissions. They don’t care. They have their own standards and their own process, and whether you got into Harvard doesn’t mean anything to them. They only care about how well you will fit at Acme.

If you just earned a great award, there is no harm in letting your favorite college know. It is probably too late to help your admissions but it can’t hurt you. The sooner they know about your great award, the better.

I would not mention your other admissions.

Sorry, letting them know about an award is fine, and it is ok to add that you would be really excited to attend the school.

I misread the “award” as a Financial Aid Award from another school. Don’t mention being admitted into any other schools. There is no up-side until after you are admitted. It could even backfire: “Oh, she got into ABC. We can’t compete with ABC’s Financial Aid. Let’s give the spot to another student”.

OperaDad is right.

Unless the award you received is the Nobel Prize, it’s neither worth it nor necessary to bother the school with telling them about it. They have your app and have most likely already reviewed it and made a decision. I can’t think of a case where a single award would swing a decision one way or the other.
