A refrigerator needed in a dorm room???

A USB drive from UCHicago arrived preloaded with O week information.

Among the things to bring, there was a refrigerator (4 cubic feet).

Is is really necessary? that's quite bulky to haul....

Being an opportunitist that he is, my S1 was "hoping" his roommate is a Martha Stewart type (male version) and will bring one and perhaps he can be a moocher :)

It is easier to go to the nearby (if one is driving) Target and buy the big stuff than it is to ship it or haul it cross country.

The refrigerators in question are rather small and won’t fit much in it. I don’t think that your roommate would be able to mooch off of his roommate.

I would say yes, buy a refrigerator. They’re not terribly large, and they really are quite convenient. As a first year, we had communal refrigerators, but they can get quite full and you don’t want other people to throw your stuff out or eat it themselves (and trust me, it happens). If you have trouble with bringing it from wherever you’re coming from, just buy one when you get here.

They’re this size: http://img.alibaba.com/photo/11335892/Mini_bar_Fridge_Mini_Refrigerator_Small_Refrigerator.jpg

Neither of my kids had an in-room refrigerator (nor did the roommate of the only one of them to have a roommate), and I never heard any complaints about it. The communal refrigerators worked fine, although there might be a problem if someone had to have a sixpack of cold brews handy all the time.

D had a mini traffic jam in her suite moving in 1st year. 3 of the 4 (not her) brought fridges and there was not space for all of them. One went home immediately.

As others have suggested, some things can wait. Target is not far, but you do need a car, and just about everything can be ordered online and delivered to the dorm.

I would give similar advice for printers. D went 4 years with lots of papers all four years without having her own printer.

Ditto. My D flew in for her first year. (Parents were with her, as we would not want to miss the cermonies–see other thread.) She’d shipped a couple of boxes, and we did not have excess baggage. We did not rent a car and did not make any Target runs.

After arriving, she and her roommate did decide to get a small fridge (I think they may have rented it), and she did decide to get her own printer (she got it on line).

All in all, we did virtually no hauling–and even so, their room could have won an award for “best decorated,” or “place that people enjoy hanging out in.”

You mean it’s not advisable to drag a minifridge with you on the bus???

I won’t be taking one. I’m a minimalist.

If you do take it on the bus, make sure you get a 22 cubic foot side by side to make it worth the effort… :)

S and roommates rented one that was a combination fridge/microwave. It cost less that $150 for the year and it was split four ways. Size wise it was adequate for the 4 of them. Easy to return at end of the year and no worries. Didn’t need printer.

Could you get by without it until second semester? At the end of each semester there are always little fridges needing new homes. Tell your RH you want one. Look at the ads on uchicagomarketplace.

Search on marketplace(.uchicago.edu) around the end of the summer, and there will be a few for sale. I bought a good one for less than the one-year rental price.

Don’t buy one until you get to college. I never used a fridge when I was in housing (I enjoyed the dining halls very much) and when I needed the brews chilled, I went to a neighbor and exchanged an ironing board, tape, or any of the other conveniences I had with me.

Thanks everybody for your input. Based on the advice here, I decided not to buy and haul a mini fridge. We will see how S does without it first.

Again, you all never fail to give me good advice! This is really a super helpful board.
