I have received some devasting news today..one of teachers told me today that I have received a C..yes a C...for the semester. I don't understand it..in my other class, I'm getting an A, so my Grad GPA thus far will be a 3.0. My homework grade is a 96.3%, but it is nowhere reflected on my tests. I don't know whether he is grading me ridiculously harder than the other students, because I am the only girl. I have never in my life got a C, especially in a MATH course. In undergrad, I got one B in all my math classes, and that was in Real Analysis. I graduated Summa Cum Laude with a 3.9 from the Honors College What should I do? Should I explain to the university why I received the C, because I'm applying to a program in Applied Math and the C is in Numerical Analysis, but the A was in Complex Variables and Applications? I am so stressed out. Do you think this will have a drastic negative effect on my grad school application? Please someone...I need advice!! I feel the little hope I did have is being stomped on by my grade in Numerical Analysis.

Over a hundred views and no one has any advice???

I imagine most people, like me, don't feel that they can accurately help you. Here's my advice: You should talk to the prof, and ask advisors and profs what they think about your chances now. Also, add addendums to various grad apps about your homework grade in the class and the situation in general.

Thanks DRab!

Another option might be to retake the course. I can be wrong but, if the new
grade replaces the current one in your transcript (although if this happens
depends on your school's policy), would it not work in a good way? (I am
sorry if this is useless information.)

Also, I believe that a C itself doesn't actually disqualify you, given that
there are other important factors to be considered in the admissions process.
It is hard for me to imagine that all admitted applicants have got straight A's.

As DRab wrote, there are several things you can do to deal with the grade.
And even in the worst case, your overall GPA is good and there are other
things you can do to improve your competitiveness.

Good luck ;)

10bets, I thought about retaking the class, but it is only offered in the Fall. I also thought about taking Part II of the course and just make an oustanding grade in the half, but no else is enrolling in the class. So, I just wrote an addendum to attach to my graduate application explaining the situtation and why I received a C, and what actions that I have taken to prevent a repeat of the whole ordeal. Next semester, I am only taking one class, PDE?

Another question: DO you think I should also mail the addendum with my fellowship applications that are requesting a transcript for this semester? Only 3/9 fellowships that I'm applying to actually want this semester's grades.

If I were you, I would attach additional pieces of paper explaining the
situation to those 3 fellowship applications. But I am sorry, I really don't
know about the fellowship application process. I, still, don't think it is a
bad idea.
