A thought on West Point SLS program

This ia a terrific program for juniors held at West Point. But it seems the merits of this program are misunderstood by most who attend or do not attend. The fact you attended or not will have little if anything to do with your applicaiton for admission. If you applied to SLS and were nto accepted will mean nothing to your chances in being accepted into USMA the next year. Pretty well the same if you were accepted and attended.

The SLS program is to allow those who may attend West Point with terific records going into their junior year to check out West Point. In fact, if you do have a solid record and are pretty certain you wish to go to West Point, it might make sense to go to the USNA SLS program so you can be certain in your choice, or the USAF SLS program.

If you have the chance to go to Boys/Girls State but it conflicts with SLS - I would think carefully about turning down Boys/Girls State. That program will have impact on your admission file.

Approach the SLS as your opportunity to see if West Point is for you.

The liaison at my school told me visiting the SLS and getting accepted would vastly help your chances, and that seems logical. But it won’t hurt your record if you did not attend.

statistically about 50% of SLS participants get into USMA the following year.
