A Tip for New freshmen

Take your Speech or Communications class in your first term at school.

When its over you will say,. Thank god I did.

just trust me and take it first,.

dont wait on it.

While we're on the topic of New Freshmen

What are the required courses one must take at any college

thanks

Psycology
Speech
Writing
A 101 class for the school.

their are somemore

but make sure speech is on 1st semester.

oh really?......why is that?....i wanna know why so i could possibly schedule it right away..........its listed in the third semester section of my curriculum-as one of the courses i need to take.......

Well alot of people hate public speaking. It is ranked the #1 thing women are scared of by NY times. worse than rape.

Its just a class that irretates people including me and it was the biggest relief when it was over.

Well the fact that you will hopefully improve speech giving and writing skills may be a good incentive to put it in first semester, but besides that reason...I found the class to be torture so it was great to get it over with.

i don't have to take a speech class at my school UCI yay lol.

its beneficial...IMO but if you don't have to, well yeah

i'm taking speech and intro to comm this semester. and my school has a language requirement. I thought i wuz done with spanish.......

Uh... In most cases, Intro to Comm has nothing to do with Public Speaking... It's a theoretical/research based study of different forms of media. At least, that's what it was at every school I applied to (all of 4 years ago, things may have changed)

I wasn't aware that speech was required at a lot of schools. Glad I don't have to take it :p

This is going to vary a lot by school. Some schools have no requirements and others have a lot. But I would say that generally you need to fulfill the language requirement, probably take a writing seminar, and have to take at least one math and one science class.

"Uh... In most cases, Intro to Comm has nothing to do with Public Speaking..."

Just going by my own personal experience. My course focused on both the public speaking aspect and the basics of forming arguments.

seriously?

Hmmm... seems odd to me. To me, communications is generally the study of communication (usually mass).

Unearth, I disagree. Lots of people like public speaking! But if you do not like it, why even take the course at all? It's not required at a lot of colleges. The "getting it over with approach" can also backfire. What if a student gets discouraged by the difficulty (or his lack of interest in) the class?

Again, I think every situation is different. I recognize that your advice is offered with good intentions, but I have to say: what's good for one person is not automaticaly good for another.

I havent even heard of a college that doeant require it.

it is standard with any B.S

Sdizzle, when a poll suggests that the majority of women fear public speaking more than rape. That says somthing.

Then again Communications in rated as the #1 thing employers look for and its the most important thing. because if you cant talk then you are worthless.

I hate public speaking. It's a necesary evil for me. I haven't heard of a college that doesn't require it either

I don't mind public speaking at all. You'll have to do for other classes eventually anyway. I can easily go up in front of the class and talk about some subject as long as I prepared good enough. Otherwise, it's hard for me to socialize with random people out of class. Kind of weird but true.

I've never taken a speech class, though I did deliver a speech in 8th grade...
As far as I know, Princeton doesn't require any speech classes.

I'll be going to Bucknell this fall, and it doesn't require public speaking.

Ive never heard of a college not having any communications class.

That would seem pretty bad as its ranked the #1 most important thing by employers for all jobs.

even above math and science skills
