A Week Without Facebook? Pa. College Tries It Out

"A central Pennsylvania technological college with fewer students than many Facebook users have friends is blacking out social media for a week." How long can you put off sending today’s breakfast cereal choice to your 3,173-person distribution list? Huh? HOW LONG?!?!

I could go a week without facebook, but it would be a PITA if I did. I wouldn’t be able to promote my club events nearly as well.

I went two weeks without Facebook when I had to send my laptop in for repair. It wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. I’m hardly on there now.

And while it would suck in terms of club promotion, I’m so grateful that most clubs at my school still rely on list serves to send out emails about important events rather than solely relying on Facebook.

I can do it. I went 2 months pretty much without any internet while I was in Costa Rica.

Now I wouldn’t want to. I like to play a few FB games at night to unwind. Plus, a few of my profs use fb as a way for groups to collaborate.

Blocking facebook? Sure. Whatever. I could go a week without facebook (although I wouldn’t like it).

But blocking linkedin? Is that a joke? That’s just flipping stupid.
Linked in is not a social media outlet in the same sense that facebook is. Like hell would I follow a ban like this if I was looking for a job if a recruiter had a linkedin profile.

Even though I do not use facebook, I would certainly consider penalising the school by taking my business elsewhere as a result of this arbitrary stunt. That is, of course, I had the great misfortune of attending that school.

I use facebook and the listserv that I have access to, but the listserv is not nearly as effective as facebook is. I suppose more students would check their email if they didn’t have facebook, theoretically, but then I would have access to a finite number of people, whereas on facebook if someone accepts my invite to my event it’s posted to their wall for all their friends to see, too.

the event feature is great, as is the fact that my student groups can communicate with the entire campus for free.

however, fb is out of control. makes everything less personal. it has its pros and cons.

Jimmy Fallon made a joke about this. According to him they have to write an essay about their experiences after the week. The essays will be called “We all have smartphones dumbass.”
