A word about Hofstra admissions

Since I was in 10th grade Hofstra has been my dream school. My SATs are well above 1100. I have great grades, I'm a member of over 6 clubs, varsity athlete. However, after getting accepted I received just the basic package of 10K a year. after receiving my need base package (all of which was from the federal government) It was very evident that I could not afford Hofstra. I emailed my admissions counselor if there was anything I could do to receive more aid. Needless to say he never emailed me back. I was told by a secretary at undergraduate admissions to submit a scholarship appeal so I did. After a about a week and half I called to see my status of the appeal. They told me they would call me tomorrow because they processed it that very day. They never called. I called again a few days later and they told me they processed it that day, and will call me tomorrow. they never called. I finally got a chance to talk to my admissions counselor and he told me he would let me know the next day. He never let me know. I called him the office the next day and was told he was out of the office that day. I was blown-off by Hofstra admissions for weeks. Needless to say I am not going to Hofstra. I was just a number. I am heartbroken.

Hofstralover, I am so very sorry you are so disappointed! You tried and tried and they just didn’t respond. I understand how heartbroken you are. You are sad now, but I hope eventually you will be able to pick up the pieces and find a college experience that will be fulfilling for you. Good luck!

You should email this to them. That really sucks. I know how you feel though. I too had to give up my top school cause of money. Good Luck!

I am so sorry to hear your story as I can “hear” your disappointment.
Some advice: when someone doesn’t get back to you in 2 tries - escalate. Especially if its an important issue that is time critical. This means contacting the head of admissions or whomever that person’s supervisor is. And keep on escalating until you get a response. You may have had better luck if someone with greater authority tried to contact them, someone like the head of guidance at your school or your parents.

I too am so sorry about your situation with Hofstra. It is a great school and I can understand why it is your dream school. I have to say I agree with the above post, you need to get one of your parents involved. As a parent of an entering freshman, i have to say that everytime I’ve needed to call Hofstra, every single person I have spoken with has gone above and beyond to help me. One even called me unexpectedly to provide further help even after I was satisfied with the answer I had already received.

Even though freshmen are usually 18 years old, they still need the assistance of parents (or some other caring adult) to help them navigate the crazy process of college admissions, and even beyond.

I also understand the issue you have with the amount of financial aid you received. I too wish my D had gotten more, but they did give her a nice bit, so I didn’t want to complain too much. Hofstra IS very expensive, no doubt about it. But even if they couldn’t offer you more money, they need to go ahead and be upfront and tell you that too so that you can make your college decision.

I wish you luck and hope you can get this worked out.

I just noticed your post from April 30 and apologize that you did not hear back from your admission counselor in a timely fashion. We would to love to talk to you and see if we can make Hofstra your home in fall 2011. Unfortunately, I cannot see your name or contact information so I am going to ask you to contact Jessica Eads, Vice President for Enrollment Management directly. You can reach her at deanofadmissions@hofstra.edu . We look forward to speaking with you.
