AAAA what are my chances?

hi guys,
I'm Linda Lucy and I am applying to UVA as my top choice. What do you think my chances are?
GPA-3.4

SAT-Writing-700
Math-550
Reading-730

In state (Virginia beach area)

tons of extracariculars (president of Dancer's Club, Secretary of French honor
society, National honor society, National math honor society, vp of young liberals club)

6 APs

Race-white, female

Community service:
food bank (since 9th grade)
homeless shelter (9-11th)

only problem is that I got a D in Calculus my junior year. and that dragged down my gpa and class rank (20%).

So what do you guys think??

yea, um. Your math sat and your GPA/Class Rank are low. That D in Calc will hurt you -- did the have the option of retaking the class and replacing the grade? I'd say apply as a reach, but have plenty of other schools as back ups?

well i am applying as an English major, if that makes any difference?

It won't help at all. I give you a low chance.

scratch that, after a rereading, im giving you "dear God hope for good essays low"

All things aside though, good luck.

I wouldn't be so negative as ehiunno.

Plenty of people get into UVA with a 1250 SAT -- its actually a very respectable score. the part that is worrisome is more that your math is so much lower than your verbal. And that D will not look good on your transcript.

You don't need straight As to get into UVA -- I sure didn't have all As. But having a D is a real bad killer unless you have some sort of extenuating circumstance. Be sure to explain it on your application somewhere.

Again though, I'll ask -- Why not re-take the course? Even if it didn't replace the lower grade, at least having the higher grade on your transcript would show that you understood you had difficulty and went the extra step to be sure you understood it. Since you took it as a junior, you were obviously advanced in math -- why not re-take it senior year, you had time. Your low Math SAT and the D don't combine well on your application.

You have good ECs, not overly strong, but at least you have some leadership positions -- hopefully they aren't just fluff and you can emphasize on your application how much time and effort you put into them. If they are just fluff.... ehhh, then not looking so good.

Either way, just work really hard on the essays and make sure your senior year grades are awesome. I hope you didn't just drop out of math senior year -- and are doing something to show you are trying to improve that D in one way or another (taking a different Math course, retaking it, etc)

well i would have loved to retake it...but my guidance councelor told me that would be a waste.
But I do have straight a's this year! you think that'll help?

Only depends on what you are taking.

What is your course load like -- Which APs? What else?

I still say that you had better have plenty of other schools -- UVa is a definite reach.

im taking 3 aps and 4 honors. I have a few other schools in mind, but I would looove to get into uva! But how big of a chance at uva do I have, do you think?
-AP Chemistry
-AP English
-AP Goverment

-Band
-Honors Sociology
-Honors Drama (V)
-Honors Physics

Other schools:
tech
vcu
sweet briar

Hey the best advice I can give is to go to your guidance counselor and ask stats for kids that got in last year. My school sends about 7-8 (All top 10 percent!!) each year and their stats are the best chances you can look at! Your SAT is high (despite the low math score) but you really need to be top 10% to make the cut (so I've heard).

You're definitely in at VCU. Pretty sure about Tech too.

Ok. Here's the way I see it.

I can't say anything else about UVa. It is a definite reach for you. I don't know which school you are coming from, how you are ranked against other graduates from your school etc. It is a reach. And that's about all I can say. Sometimes surprises happen and we get into our reaches -- there are sometimes things on our applications that we don't see as a big deal that might really surprise and excite admissions officers. Just do the best you can on all of your college essays, turn everything in neatly and promptly and just hope for the best. Sometimes college admissions just feels like a crap shoot and school that people assume were backups turn them down, etc. So I can't give you any sort of "yes" or "no" on UVa. Just cross your fingers like the rest of the applicants.

Sweet Briar: Its funny you mention this cause I have personal experience with this school as well -- my sister attended. I loved the campus and the atmosphere really grows on you -- the friends my sister made here were without a doubt the best part of the school. And she loved the small class sizes and intimate teacher interaction. A lot of students do transfer out after 2nd year however, mostly due to needed certain requirements for grad programs and stuff. She and a good number of her friends transferred, but they were highly regarded in their transfer applications, and got into every single school she applied to for transfer admission (including UVA though she did decline that offer for another school).

As for chances, I see you as a definite "in" at sweet briar -- and with merit aid. They have a SAT/GPA method for some of the scholarships, and though I couldn't find it on their website right now, I believe that a 1250 would definitely put you in their scholarship bracket.

VCU -- Apply to Honors as well and try to get the honors housing ;) its nicer. I see this as a match/safety (more on the safety side) for you.

VT -- This is a match for you.

But it feels like its all a crapshoot -- what one college admin office might like about you, another might not even recognize. So just go in with a tough skin.

I would also suggest looking at JMU in Harrisonburg and Mary Washington in Fredericksburg -- never hurts to apply to just a couple more schools to have some choices when the decisions come rolling in. It can be frustrating to just have to choose between one or two schools you weren't really thrilled about. Choosing between 3 or 4 makes you feel better about your decision. Trust me on that one.

With a 3.4 she will have a tough time getting into Mary Washington. She should try VCU, Longwood, Christopher Newport, Radford............maybe, maybe, maybe JMU.

I've heard that one C on your transcript spells doom for UVa. Is that true?

i got a c in high school. i got in out of state. it doesn't

I had a C in precal in 10th grad, got in in state Rodman Scholar.

Basically if you are able to show that you know it was a mistake and that wasn't your full potential, its really not a big deal.

unfortunately i don't think you will get into UVA with the D. they take the Ds and Cs really seriously.

if you apply oos to uva and you have made an A in almost all classes (a few bs in ap classes but 4 or 5 on AP test) but your SAT score is not the best : 700, 700, 650(writing) but the best AP ENglish grade in your class,
decent ecs but not great, what can you do to get in?

b's counselor says he would b a perfect match for uva but worried at the sat.
school is a breeze for him, he is so smart but he just does not do that great on the tests.
